Adult Services Librarian, Millbury Public Library, MA

The Adult Services Librarian, under the direction of the Director, is responsible for assisting in all areas including planning, selecting, coordinating, delivering and evaluating library services and programs for adult patrons. Other duties will include:

  • Participates in collection development including Library of Things
  • Order and catalog adult library material
  • Creates book displays to promote library materials throughout the library
  • Develops contacts in the community to foster good public relations and coordinates outreach programs to our adult population
  • Plans and executes adult programming and digital literacy instruction for in person or virtually and on/off site
  • Oversees the adult summer reading program and book clubs assigned
  • Coordinates programs to reflect library initiatives and strategic plan
  • Set up and dismantle program space, assist the presenter, and ensure a positive, professional experience
  • Assists in managing social media content including Facebook, Instagram, YouTube
    channel, and library website
  • Collaborates on newsletters and promoting library programs
  • Assists when needed at the circulation desk and provides reference services to library patrons
  • Seeks grant funding opportunities
  • May provide back-up staff support in other functional areas of the library, such as children’s and teen’s services, and circulation
  • Answering the telephone, addressing patron questions, assisting with copier, scanning, and faxing
  • Work will include evening and weekend hours with some flexibility
  • Acting manager in the absence of the Director and Children/YA Librarian and Library Manager
  • Attend monthly staff meetings and mandatory Town staff trainings
  • Other duties and responsibilities as needed or assigned

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • MLIS preferred, but not required (MLIS students encouraged to apply)
  • Six months experience in customer-facing position
  • Prior experience with Adult programming
  • Ability to work independently with minimum supervision as well as work as a team player.
  • Experience with personal computers, internet/browsers, Google, printers, and copy machines.
  • Experience with downloadable media and devices.
  • Detail oriented with an ability to use alpha-numeric organizational schemes.

INTERPERSONAL COMMUNICATION:

  • Requires the ability to interact with people (i.e. supervisor, coworkers, general public of all ages, school teachers, volunteers, and others) to convey or exchange professional information, beyond giving and/or receiving instructions.

Minimum Physical and Mental Abilities:

Sitting and standing for extended periods of time; lifting up to 30 lbs of supplies, books, materials, and computer equipment; reaching for books on shelves, sitting and kneeling on the floor, and climbing on stools.

Thorough knowledge of reader interest levels and broad knowledge of books, authors, and films related to children, young adults, and adults.

Operate the following equipment as required, including, but not limited to: computer equipment, fax machine, copy machine, e-readers, and other such devices.

Considerable knowledge of the resources, procedures and practices of library administration.

Working knowledge of methods of public administration and management in relation to a variety of library activities.

Demonstrates experience working with the public in a courteous and supportive way.

Ability to maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, supervisors, volunteers, and patrons using or working in the library.

Ability to present a positive image of the library in attitude, communications, and appearance.

Ability to interpret library policies, objectives and facilities to community groups and the general public and to establish and maintain favorable public relations.

Ability to communicate concisely and effectively.

Ability to organize alphabetically and numerically.

Ability to learn the Dewey Decimal system.

Working knowledge of automated library systems.

Knowledgeable in computers: internet, Microsoft Word, Excel, MS Office Suite

Ability to learn an online timesheet/payroll system for reporting to and from work.
