Under the direction of the Director of Academic & Biomedical Administration, the St. Jude Archivist is responsible for the management of the St. Jude Historical Archives. The St. Jude Historical Archives documents the history and development of St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, its leadership, clinical and scientific advances, global initiatives and culture. The Archives includes the records and materials related to St. Jude in various formats (physical, digital, audiovisual, and multimedia).
The St. Jude Archivist manages aspects of establishing and maintaining the research hospital archives program, including collection, appraisal, accessioning, processing, outreach, and donor relations activities. The Archivist works with various internal and external groups to make the archival collections usable, discoverable, and accessible, supports institutional initiatives, develops meaningful and relevant public engagement through internal and external partnerships, and supports an active research audience through excellent reference and research service. The Archivist will work closely with the Director of the Biomedical Library and other members of the institution, as well as project hires, interns and volunteers. The Archivist will play an active, hands-on role in establishing the St. Jude archive.

Job Responsibilities
- Develops, maintains, and oversees disposition of St. Jude materials and historical archives, including providing training and guidance to St. Jude staff and departments on records management practices and procedures. With the library team, establishes and implements collection guidelines, policies, and workflows related to stewardship activities.
- Accessions, processes, and makes available archival collections through the management and discovery platforms, such as ArchivesSpace and CONTENTdm.
- In Year One, develops a phased plan for developing archival collections, with
activities including collecting, migrating, standardizing, and creating finding aids;
generating new descriptive information; rehousing materials; and reprocessing materials. - Works as part of a collaborative team to support library activities, goals, and initiatives, including but not limited to reference and research support, programming, instruction, digital projects, and outreach.
- Collaborates with stakeholders and leaders on select outreach, exhibition, and initiatives pertaining to the history of St. Jude, including a small-scale, permanent historical exhibition with an anticipated installation in the next 2-4 years
- Works with Biomedical Library staff to document and develop strategies for managing the institution’s collection of St. Jude-authored publications.
- Supports cross-departmental institutional initiatives related to preservation, publishing, digital collections, and public programming, including Human Resources, Strategic Communication, Education and Outreach, Biomedical Library, Liaison Office, ALSAC, Executive Communications, among others.
- Onboard and supervise staff, interns and volunteers.
- Participates in professional development activities, attending and presenting workshops, meetings, and conferences.
- Keep abreast of current developments, trends, and best practices.
Minimum Education and/or Training:
- Master’s degree in library science from a program accredited by the American Library Association required.
- The ideal candidate will have a Master’s degree in Archival Management, or related graduate level degree.
Minimum Experience:
- Minimum requirement: 4+ progressive years of experience in library services or relevant comparable area.
- Preference will be given to candidates with professional archival leadership in a museum or academic library setting.
- Supervision experience preferred.
Special Skills, Knowledge and Abilities:
- Knowledge of archival theory, issues, trends, and best practices, including descriptive standards, metadata, preservation principles, and concepts related to digitized and born-digital materials.
- Understanding of records management principles.
- Strong interpersonal and customer service skills, including an ability to build relationships, communicate effectively, and collaborate with diverse internal and external stakeholders.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
