Head of Access Services, Tisch Library, Tufts University, Medford, MA

Job Overview

Tisch Library is a student-centered research library, dedicated to the support of teaching, learning, and scholarship in Tufts’ School of Arts and Sciences and School of Engineering. We provide collections, subject expertise, and technology-rich research and learning environments, with a variety of services and programs to meet the information needs of our students, faculty, and staff.

The Access Services Department ensures timely and effective access to library collections, facilities and services, managing circulation, reserves, basic reference, interlibrary loan, stacks management, document delivery and scanning. We provide a welcoming, inclusive  environment for our patrons, with collaborative staff committed to teamwork. Reporting to the Associate Director of Tisch Library, the Head of Access Services provides leadership and strategic direction for the department. We seek a user-centered leader who can strengthen and expand partnerships across library departments and with colleagues across the university to ensure an inclusive environment of access to library services, collections, programs, and spaces. Responsibilities

  • Provide leadership, strategic direction, and management for two departments in Access Services: Frontline Services, Resource Sharing, and 35 student workers.
  • Create a positive and inclusive team environment that fosters collegiality and innovation. Mentor and develop staff talent, and engage staff in collaborative strategic planning, decision making, and delivery of user-centered services.
  • Develop, implement, manage, and evaluate an innovative access services environment that responds to changing user needs and emerging technologies.
  • Collect and analyze data, prepare reports, and make informed recommendations for services and spaces.
  • Stay abreast of trends and best practices in the field. Encourage and provide support for the professional development of the department.
  • As a member of the Library Management Council, participate in strategic planning, library management, and priority setting.

Basic Requirements

  • ALA-accredited master’s degree in Library and Information Science or equivalent
  • 7+ years working in a library environment
  • 3+ years of experience supervising staff in libraries
  • 3+ years of experience in an access services area such as circulation, course reserves, interlibrary loan, or stacks management
  • Experience in working collaboratively in a team environment to improve processes and to create a culture of learning among staff
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and a demonstrated ability to work with diverse member of an academic and public community
  • Demonstrated knowledge of current practices and emerging trends in access services and academic libraries

Preferred Qualifications

  • Ability to independently set priorities, adapt and drive change initiatives, and successfully manage projects
  • Experience with assessment and using results to improve services and workflow efficiencies
  • Experience fostering collegiality and an inclusive environment among staff and users
  • Ability to develop structures and workflows to maximize user benefits and operational efficiencies

Pay Range

Minimum $84,400.00, Midpoint $105,550.00, Maximum $126,700.00
