Nature of the Work:
The Consortial Systems (CS) Librarian is part of a team of Systems Librarians and
professional staff dedicated to the shared systems and services managed by the
University System of Maryland and Affiliated Institutions (USMAI) Library
Consortium. The CS Librarian participates in the implementation, maintenance,
and support of applications used by the 17 member libraries that make up the
consortium. Reporting to the Head of Consortial Library Systems and Operations,
the Consortial Systems Librarian works with other USMAI team members to meet
operational objectives and maintain current systems and services, respond to
member problems utilizing ticketing systems and other methods to track work
progress and communicate
USMAI staff and member-library staff working in multiple locations.
The incumbent supports collaboration and teamwork by liaising with consortium
committees, communities, and working groups in suggesting and drafting
policies, procedures, and programs.
The Consortial Systems Librarian supports excellence through system and
subject matter expertise. USMAI is currently undergoing an ILS system migration
to Alma / Primo VE so the incumbent must have or develop broad and detailed
mastery of these systems, especially in access service and resource sharing, to
help the consortium maximize efficiencies through both workflows and system
integration.
Working with other USMAI staff and in consultation with the consortium’s longterm and strategic goals, the Consortial Systems Librarian gathers data to
evaluate programs and services. Under the direction of the Head of Consortial
Library Systems & Operations, the Consortial Systems Librarian effectively
balances liaising with members of the subject matter community with demands
of the day-to-day operational needs of the consortium.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Support for Access Services Functions: (35%)
- Serve as point of contact for programs, services, and issues for Access
Services. - Serve as consortium liaison for Access Services USMAI member
committees, communities, task forces, and other ad hoc groups. - Coordinate Access Services training, documentation, and workflow
guidance for member libraries.
Support for Resource Sharing Functions: (35%) - Serve as point of contact for programs, services, and issues for Resource
Sharing. - Serve as consortium liaison for Resource Sharing USMAI member
committees, communities, task forces, and other ad hoc groups. - Coordinate resource sharing training, documentation, and workflow
guidance for member libraries and the consortium as a whole.
Consortium Staff Participation: (25%) - Identify, monitor, and escalate service issues internally and when
necessary with external vendor support. - Participate in consortium operational planning.
- Lead or participate in new initiatives.
- Lead efforts to standardize workflows and system configurations.
- Maintain awareness of all consortium operations for purposes of
communication and coordination.
Other Duties and Activities: (5%) - Participates in training related to promoting diversity, equity, inclusion,
and accessibility, as provided by the University, the Libraries, and/or other
recognized higher education or community organizations. - Contributes to achieving the University’s and/or the Libraries’ diversity,
equity, inclusion, and accessibility goals. - Performs other duties, as assigned.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
Extensive computer use.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:
May supervise student assistants or graduate assistants. - QUALIFICATIONS (Knowledge, skills, and abilities):
- Ability to work with team in the operational management, customer
support, training, documentation, and community management of
products and services used by libraries - Commitment to excellent customer service and positive user experiences.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Effective interpersonal and communication skills.
- Demonstrated initiative and ability to work on multiple projects
simultaneously. - Flexibility in a changing technological and organizational environment.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team-based
environment. - Knowledge of library software applications and services.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office and other productivity and
communication applications.
EDUCATION:
Required
Master’s degree in Library and/or Information Science from an ALA-accredited
institution or a non-USA equivalent; or a graduate degree relevant to the
position’s duties.
EXPERIENCE (Be specific, indicate the minimum years of experience
and skills needed):
Required - A minimum of three (3) years of professional experience in
information technology services. - Experience in Access Services or Resource Sharing.
- Experience with commercial and/or open source library software
solutions.
Preferred - Experience with or working knowledge of consortial environments
and requirements. - Experience with community and content management tools.
- Experience delivering presentations.
- Experience with customer support systems, training, and
documentation. Experience with Ex Libris’ Alma or Primo platforms. - Experience with ILLiad, RapidILL, or other resource sharing software.

Ranks as established by the University of Maryland. This is a non-tenured,
contractual position. Rank at appointment is based on the successful applicant’s
experience and relevant credentials.
