Library Assistant (Part-Time), Access Services, Massachusetts Maritime Academy, Buzzards Bay, MA

Statement of Duties

The Academy seeks a part-time Library Assistant for Access Services. This position will assist with circulation tasks, serials & other materials processing, shelving and stacks maintenance. May be assigned other library support duties as required.  Hours may vary as needed, to include day and evening shifts.

Salary: $20/hour

Responsibilities

  • Provide Library and IT Service Desk coverage and answer basic directional / informational questions.
  • Use library catalog software to check in / check out / renew library materials.
  • Assist patrons with filling out IT Service Desk tickets.
  • Pick up, open & process incoming mail; process newly-cataloged books & media
  • Track & input serials records & claims
  • Process incoming serials & newly-cataloged books & media.
  • Shelve library materials & perform stacks maintenance tasks.
  • Oversee / assist Work Study students as needed
  • Fulfill interlibrary loan requests & scanning requests.
  • Pull & process circulation “holds” (items requested by other libraries).
  • Assist with maintaining files.
  • Straighten the Service Desk & common areas, as needed.
  • Assist with other library support projects, as assigned.

Qualifications and Requirements

  • Skills needed:  computer literacy skills including expertise in spreadsheet & word processing programs (e.g., Google Suite &/or Microsoft equivalents); excellent customer service skills; ability to lift up to 25 pounds; ability to retrieve & shelve library materials from 3 inches to over 6 feet off the floor.
  • Minimum experience:  One year of library experience or equivalent job experience.
  • Minimum education:  Associate’s degree.

Preferred Qualifications

Two or more years of Library & IT Service Desk &/or Access Services experience; experience with Koha, Sirsi Dynix or an equivalent integrated library system, including serials modules; familiarity with OCLC’s Firstsearch & WorldCat systems.
