Full-Time World Languages Librarian I (Adult Services), Cary Memorial Library, Lexington, MA

Cary Memorial Library has a position available for a full-time World Languages Librarian I. As one of the  busiest libraries in Massachusetts, Cary Memorial Library works hard to be at the forefront of library services.  We celebrate the diversity of our community through our programming and our collections.

The World Languages Librarian I oversees the World Languages Collection for the Adult and Youth Services areas of the library, including print, audiovisual, and electronic collections. Of particular importance is the library’s large Chinese Language collection. The World Languages Librarian I works closely with World Language vendors as well as Lexington residents and cultural groups to build collections that meet the needs of the community.

In addition to World Languages duties, Librarians assist in all service areas of the library, a busy, service-oriented environment. The  individual in this position will be expected to work at any public service desk, but can expect to work primarily at the Main Adult Services Desk. This position performs a full range of library responsibilities, including but not limited to assisting patrons in locating material and information, checking materials in and out, handling  deliveries from the Minuteman Library Network, and answering telephones and emails.

Qualifications

Qualifications: The ideal candidate will hold a Masters in Library and Information Science from an American Library Association Accredited Program; be fluent in Mandarin (Chinese); and have experience working in libraries, including maintaining a Chinese language collection.  Curiosity and the desire to learn and grow new technology skills are important for success in this position. PC proficiency is required. Experience using automated library systems is preferred. Language skills: Proficiency in written and spoken English and fluency in Mandarin. Knowledge of additional languages is a plus.
Salary Range: $31.34 – $38.97  hourly, commensurate with experience, in seven steps, plus differential pay on weekday evenings after 6 pm and all day on Saturdays. Includes an excellent benefits package. This is a Union eligible position. 

Schedule

37 hours a week, including one evening per week until 9 pm and one Saturday every four weeks. On the weeks the individual works a Saturday, they will have a scheduled weekday off. Possible opportunities to  work optional Sundays at an hourly rate of time and half may be available.
