The Director of Research, Instruction and Data Services leads librarians who are responsible for the library liaison program, the library’s instruction and outreach program, programs in digital scholarship and data science, and the development of the library website. As a library liaison, they build relationships with students, faculty and staff. They are a vital member of the Library Leadership Team and play a key role developing and implementing the library’s strategic initiatives.

This is a full time, benefits eligible, salaried position with a hiring range of $82,514 – $105,243 annually.

Core Responsibilities

  1. Lead the Research, Instruction, and Data Services group, a team of librarians with expertise in research, scholarship, instructional design, data management and visualization, user experience, video production, and open educational resources who support the evolving research needs of Middlebury’s liberal arts curriculum and its community of scholars and teachers. 
  2. Oversee the library’s instruction and outreach program, and library liaison program, by assessing needs and communicating goals, and by acting as the library’s first point of contact with new faculty.
  3. Contributes to efforts support digital scholarship and data science research across Middlebury, cultivating strong working relationships with faculty, staff, and students who use data and digital methods in their research, teaching, and scholarship, ensuring that there is expert instruction to students, faculty, and staff regarding the discovery, acquisition, management, manipulation, interpretation, analysis, and visualization of data.
  4. Oversee the development of library website information architecture and content, including the development of web guides, learning content, and outreach materials that highlight library resources and exhibit universal design principles for accessibility.
  5. Build relationships with students, faculty, and staff by providing discipline-specific research advice, proactively communicating about relevant resources, and making collection development decisions that are informed by curricular needs.
  6. Teach research and information literacy skills in the classroom and in one-on-one meetings
  7. Contribute knowledge and creativity to the library, the college, and the profession by supporting principles of diversity, equity, and inclusion, working cooperatively, participating in campus initiatives, and engaging in scholarly and professional service activities.
  8. Serve on the Library Leadership Team and play a key leadership role in library planning and strategic initiatives.

Requirements

Position Prerequisites:

  1. Five to seven years of progressively responsible experience in research, instruction, or outreach services at an institution of higher education or research library required.
  2. Aptitude for managing and inspiring professional staff members, for example by providing advice and feedback, listening, and modeling best practices. 3-5 years of management experience is preferred.
  3. Strong organizational skills and ability to manage time and priorities, required.
  4. Graduate degree in library or information science from an accredited institution, or equivalent experience, required. 
  5. Familiarity with the infrastructures and methods of data science and digital scholarship, and knowledge of established and cutting-edge tools and methods for scholarship, research and data management, and publication including open access, open data, and preservation. 
  6. Technical aptitude, including proficiency with web authoring tools, communication tools, and citation tools, along with a willingness to develop new competencies, required.
  7. Strong interpersonal and problem-solving skills, including the ability to work collaboratively in a team-oriented environment, a passion for providing empathetic research support, a strong sense of accountability, and excellent attention to detail, required.
  8. Learner-centered teaching skills and outstanding oral and written communication skills required; foreign language skills preferred, but not required.

Physical Demands and Working Conditions

Shared participation in evening and weekend hours may be required.

The work is mostly sedentary and includes no special physical demands. It may involve some walking, standing, bending, or carrying light items.
