Consultant (Service to Special Populations), Mass. Board of Library Commissioners, Boston, MA

Due to a recent retirement the Massachusetts Board of Library Commissioners is looking for an
experienced library professional to join our team as the Consultant for Services to Special Populations.
This position reports to the Head of Library Advisory and Development. The Consultant to Special
Populations formulates and implements agency programs to improve library services to populations
who have difficulty accessing and using libraries and library services. Manages agency programs for the
incarcerated, the disability community, recent arrivals to the United States, and other vulnerable
populations. Provides technical assistance to libraries. Fosters partnerships and serves as liaison to state
agencies and community advocacy groups. Is a key member of the MBLC’s LSTA Direct Grant consulting
team. Collaborates with MBLC staff and affiliate organizations to plan special events, workshops, and
institutes.
The successful candidate is someone with at least 4 years of experience in a library setting providing
outstanding and innovative service to special populations, who is a passionate, results-driven
professional with the ability to network and forge partnerships with social service providers across the
state.
This is a hybrid work eligible position.

Salary Range: $70,429.58 – $95,722.12

Qualifications:

Applicants must have at least A) 4 years of full-time, or equivalent part-time, professional experience in
libraries, library reference work, library automation or B) any equivalent combination of the required
experience and substitutions below.

Substitutions:

  • A Bachelor’s degree with a major in education or special education may be substituted
    for two years of the required non-supervisory experience.*
  • A Graduate degree with a major in education, special education, educational
    administration, or educational counseling may be substituted for a maximum of three
    years of the required experience.

*Education toward such a degree will be prorated on the basis of the proportion of the
requirements actually completed.

NOTE: Educational substitutions will only be permitted for a maximum of three years of the required
experience.

A Master’s or higher degree in library science is preferred.
