Reference and Processing Assistant (Temp, Part Time), Peabody Museum of Archaeology and Ethnology, Cambridge, MA

The Peabody Museum of Archaeology and Ethnology at Harvard University has an opening for one 14-hour per week position running 11/1/2023 to 8/31/2024.  The Temporary Reference and Processing Assistant will report to Associate Archivist Marie Wasnock and Senior Archivist Katherine Satriano.  The person in this role will assist with specific pending reference and processing tasks, such as:

-processing (basic arrangement and description) and/or rehousing collections

-entering finding aids in ArchivesSpace

-scanning archival material for any outstanding PDF requests from users, following relevant museum scanning standards, including preparing material for scanning by removing staples and unfolding documents

-assisting with research needed to answer reference questions (e.g. looking through a box for correspondence to/from a certain person)

The Peabody Museum is situated on the ancestral and traditional land of the Massachusett people. It cares for over 1.2 million items from across the world, including cultural, archaeological, and osteological collections as well as extensive photographic and archival materials. This is a part-time temporary non-benefited position. 

Salary: $20.50 per hour 

Qualifications

The assistant will be expected to work independently with minimal supervision.  Strong organizational skills, a meticulous attention to detail, ability to prioritize work and complete projects within given time constraints, and basic computer skills, including Excel, are required.  Preference for an MLS student pursuing an archives concentration.  Preference for familiarity with ArchivesSpace.  Preference for experience in handling fragile and sometimes sensitive archival materials in a variety of formats.
