Job Description

The purpose of this position is to manage materials circulation and reader’s advisory services.

Status: FLSA Non-Exempt, 35 hours per week, union position
Salary: Grade G6, Hourly starting at $39.26

Essential Functions

  • Assists users in the selection of library materials and the use of library discovery tools, and directly provides circulation and other public services as needed, in person, by phone, and online, while ensuring that each library user receives the highest possible standard of customer service.
  • Develops and promotes reader’s and media advisory services and resources, including collection merchandising, book talks, and related activities.
  • Manages museum pass program.
  • Handles problems and patron complaints; provides assistance to staff handling difficult situations.
  • Ensures that all transactions (check-in, check-out, fine payments, reserves, renewals, payments for lost materials, etc.) respect patrons’ rights to privacy and confidentiality.
  • Ensures that library rules and regulations are maintained to maximize equitable service to all.
  • Participates in the collection development of a portion of the adult fiction, large print, and/or audiovisual collection including selecting, evaluating, and deaccessioning materials.
  • Reviews and analyzes borrower services to achieve consistency and efficiency of library functions, applying innovative and practical solutions to solve problems and enhance services.
  • Organizes, directs, oversees, and participates in the operations of the Borrower Services Department, including supervising, training, and scheduling all library staff assigned to the Circulation Desk and Reader’s Advisory Services.
  • Maintains current knowledge of the field through attendance at conferences, seminars, etc. and by keeping current with literature in the field. Learns all new technology and software programs as well as upgrades in network technology.
  • Develops and maintains a manual describing the policies and procedures of the Department.
  • Performs similar or related work as required, directed or as situation dictates.

Education, Training, and Experience

  • Master’s degree in library science from an ALA accredited institution and a demonstrated commitment to continuing professional education.
  • Three or more years of professional, progressively responsible library experience, preferably in circulation.
  • Minimum of three (3) years of experience supervising and coaching multiple direct reports in a busy service environment, at least one of those years in a library setting Demonstrated leadership abilities, including initiative, creativity, and flexibility.
  • Excellent customer service skills and written and oral communication skills are essential.
  • Any equivalent combination of education and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job.
  • The successful candidate will have experience with circulation services, collection development, and familiarity with downloadable books and services.
