Library and Archives Manager, American Research Center, Egypt

Job Description

Under the supervision of and reporting to the Deputy Director for Research and
Programs, the Manager of the Library and Archives manages and coordinates all functions of the ARCE
Library and Archives.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Determines and sets Library and Archives policies.
  • Recommend changes to Library and Archives policies and services to the Deputy Director for
    Research and Programs.
  • Develops and implements procedures for the acquisition, processing, digitization, and
    preservation of library and archival materials.
  • Works with library staff to catalog physical and digital publications for addition to the digital and
    physical library collections.
  • Maintains and expands subscriptions to digital resources and manages the purchase of
    digital books and journals.
  • Ensures the proper functioning of the library portal and the regular backup of its content.
  • Identifies, applies for and manages grants to fund Library and Archives projects.
  • Leads library and archives outreach to visiting groups.
  • Works closely with faculty from colleges and universities to increase their knowledge of how the
    library and archives can support the education of their students.
  • Produces and distributes information about the ARCE Library and Archives.
  • Assists researchers with library and archival research.
  • Writes articles for ARCE’s Scribe Magazine to inform about ARCE’s Library and Archive projects.
  • Seeks collaborative opportunities with other institutions on programs such as digitization and
    conservation.
  • Participates in professional organizations and community meetings to promote ARCE’s Library
    and Archives.
  • Tracks research requests and library, library portal and archives website visits, and briefings and
    tours to universities and other organizations.
  • Prepares an annual budget to be reviewed by the Deputy Director for Research and Programs
    and controls expenditures to administer the approved budget.
  • Works towards establishing a digital humanities lab in the new ARCE premises.
  • Disseminate and promote ARCE’s Library and Archives through lectures, podcasts,
    Google Arts and Culture stories, social media platforms and other means.
  • Supervises Library and Archives interns and volunteers.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Knowledge of research library management principles.
  • Strong command of current research library (physical and digital) best practices
  • Experience in a supervisory or managerial position
  • Knowledge of current best practices for digitization
  • Demonstrated success in managing digitization projects.
  • Ability to provide excellent reference assistance to a diverse patron population.
  • Knowledge of current archival standards for arrangement and description
  • Knowledge of preservation principles
  • Presentation and public speaking experience
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Ability to manage multiple projects at one time.
  • Ability to set and achieve goals.
  • Ability to work individually or as part of a team.
  • Excellent attention to detail.

Education, Training, and Experience

  • Master’s degree in library and information Science or equivalent
  • 5+ years of professional experience providing reference services, bibliographic instruction, and
    collection development, including at least three years in a supervisory capacity, in an academic
    library setting; any equivalent combination of training and experience which provide the
    required skills, knowledge, and abilities.
