Head of Collection Development, Saint Anselm College, (Manchester, NH)

Geisel Library at Saint Anselm College seeks a thoughtful, team-oriented Collection Development librarian to lead the critical development of our many library collections in support our college curricula and community.

Saint Anselm College is a nationally prominent Benedictine, Catholic, liberal arts college founded in 1889. Located in Manchester, NH, the college enrolls approximately 2,000 students at a scenic, residential campus and has recently begun adding online classes and select graduate programs. The library’s collections include over 214,000 physical titles, 440,000 digital titles, 125 online research databases, and an extensive Archives and Special Collections.

The Collection Development department is responsible for appropriately developing and evaluating all print and electronic library collections in support of the College’s undergraduate and graduate academic programs as well as the information needs of all members of the Saint Anselm community of students, faculty, staff, and monks. As department head, the Head of Collection Development is a member of the library’s management team that reports to the Library Director, supervises three staff members, and oversees all acquisitions, electronic resource, periodical, and interlibrary loan operations.
 

Responsibilities

  • Develop and curate all print and electronic collections to advance the collection development plan.
  • Lead all collection evaluation and assessment activities, including analyzing statistics, organizing data, producing reports, effectively communicating findings, and making data-driven decisions.
  • Develop and manage collections budget and budget projections to ensure appropriate use of funds to support the academic curriculum and faculty research.
  • Establish and build relationships with library vendors, negotiating contracts and licenses, evaluating vendors and products, and overseeing technical troubleshooting.
  • Manage existing and new formal and informal relations with consortia (e.g. EAST, NHCUC, Lyrasis) to retain, preserve, and share collections and costs.
  • Supervise interlibrary loan, acquisitions, periodicals, and electronic resource staff, serving as mentor and supporting their professional development.
  • Ensure effective and efficient interlibrary loan, acquisitions, periodicals and electronic resource management policies and procedures.
  • Lead team in developing strategic plan and annual goals for the department.
  • Co-lead the library’s subject librarian program and serve as subject librarian to assigned academic departments.
  • Teach information literacy instruction workshops requested by faculty.
  • Assist the Archives and Special Collections department in acquiring manuscripts and rare books.
  • Provide general reference services by helping patrons with their information and research needs at the Reference Desk, during individual appointments, and online.

Required Qualifications

  • Master of Library and Information Science from an ALA accredited graduate program.
  • Minimum 3 years academic library experience with demonstrated comparable collections and supervisory experience.
  • Strong analytical skills and experience with spreadsheets and statistical analysis, including producing reports and effectively communicating findings.
  • Experience building relationships and working with library vendors, including negotiating license agreements and affordable pricing.
  • Experience developing collections budgets and accurate budget projections.
  • Demonstrated successful interaction with college faculty in developing collections.
  • Experience with library systems software and/or library services platforms (e.g. Sierra).
  • Ability to manage, prioritize, and realize progress and success with multiple ongoing projects.
  • Ability to achieve short- and long-term strategic goals.
  • Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience using tools like OCLC’s GreenGlass for assessment and right-sizing of collections.
  • Participation in consortium activities involving print and electronic resource sharing and/or preservation.
  • Demonstrated experience with teaching in library information literacy programs.
