Substitute Reference Librarian, Ipswich Public Library, (Ipswich, MA)

The Ipswich Public Library is in search of one or two librarians or librarians-in-training,
committed to providing excellent customer service to join our team as on-call Reference desk
substitutes. This position works on the reference public service desk offering reader’s advisory,
answering phones, assisting with technology questions and miscellaneous general inquiries, and
requiring substantive knowledge of the library’s collections, services, systems, policies and
procedures.
Schedule
This is an on-call position, hours are given as needed. Most shifts are scheduled 2-4 weeks in
advance with occasional short notice needs. Our typical shifts are: 9am-1pm (weekdays), 1pm-
4pm (weekdays), 4pm-8pm (Mondays-Wednesdays) and 9am-4pm on Saturdays with 30-
minute lunch break. Our greatest coverage need is for evening shifts and occasional Saturdays.
Qualifications
Eligible candidates will:
- Have an MLS or be enrolled in an MLS program with coursework in reference services
completed - Ability to learn new hardware and software such as the WorkFlows ILS, Gimlet, and online
databases with ease and minimal hands-on training - Demonstrate a strong familiarity with and interest in literature, particularly bestsellers and
popular fiction and nonfiction - Have experience providing excellent customer service
We welcome library school students, new graduates, and experienced librarians for this
position; it’s not necessary that you’ve worked in a public library before as long as you believe
in and want to be a part of the important work that public libraries do. Customer service
experience is required and non-negotiable.
Pay rate is $24.52 per hour.
