Processing Archivist (project-based, part-time), Private Collection, (Brookline, MA)

Description: $25-$28 per hour, minimum 14 hours per week (2 plus days/week; flexible scheduling); site is within walking distance from Simmons campus
Term: approximately 2-3 months in Fall 2023 with possible extension
The estate of an important 20 th Century American writer and philosopher seeks an advanced graduate student or recent graduate of an archival management program to inventory, describe and arrange materials including correspondence, manuscripts, notes, and professional materials as well as
annotated books from many decades. The file contents are contained in about 40 bankers’ boxes and the collected annotated books comprise another 33 containers. The archivist will work under the supervision of the writer’s widow and her advisor, a broker of archives and rare book seller. The goal is to lightly process the collection in advance of its placement with a university library.
Basic qualifications:
- Preference will be given to an archivist familiar with modern philosophy and/or cinema studies.
- Enrollment or completion of an M.L.S. from ALA-accredited academic program with an archives concentration preferred.
- Demonstrated proficiency in archival processing and description.
- The ideal candidate is organized and resourceful, with a keen attention to detail, and possesses excellent communication skills. The project involves inventorying letters, papers, manuscripts, audiotapes and
various other paper materials. - A descriptive catalogue of the extensive library of annotated books will be prepared at the direction of the project lead.
- Proficiency with data-based and spreadsheet programs required.
- Inventory will be created using Google docs. Laptop will be supplied.
Physical requirements: Must be able to lift/push/pull/boxes of books & documents. Frequent standing, walking, bending, lifting and using stairs are necessary.
