About the Opportunity

The Northeastern University Library is seeking a Repository Assistant for a one-year part-time position to prepare digital materials for ingestion into the Civil Rights and Restorative Justice Project (CRRJ) Archive. The Repository Assistant will transform metadata, process digital files, and ingest them into the Digital Repository Service (DRS), the primary home for CRRJ’s digital archive. The Repository Assistant will transform metadata using various methods and tools, including OpenRefine, Oxygen, spreadsheets, and XSLT. They will also perform authority creation and maintenance, record quality control, and other cataloging activities. The position requires some experience with RDA, MODS, and/or XML. Some experience with digital objects and digital repositories is preferred. The right person will be detail-oriented and able to complete assigned tasks with minimal supervision in a collaborative environment. This position may be in-person (Boston, remote, or a hybrid.  

Hours: 15-18 hours a week

Hours can be flexible, but must fall between 8AM and 6PM, Monday-Friday

Pay Rate: $21 per hour

About the department: The Digital Production Services department enhances access to digital materials by reformatting, describing, and making accessible digital collections that benefit the university community and beyond. We work with university faculty and staff to digitize materials in a variety of formats, including text- based documents, photographs, and audio/visual items to support research, instruction, archival activities and community outreach. We ensure the collections are discoverable and well-described by creating rich metadata at the item and collection level. We also support the library’s Digital Repository Service, which is the primary home for storing the digital materials generated in the library and archives. Digital Production Services is a hybrid working environment with most staff working a partially remote schedule throughout the week.  

Qualifications:  

  • Completion of or enrollment in an ALA-accredited MLS or MLIS or equivalent experience (minimum 1 year creating and/or editing metadata for archives, digital collections, digital assets, etc.) 
  • Professional experience with XML, preferably MODS 
  • Knowledge of LSCH and name authorities 
  • Understanding of content schemas, such as RDA, and how to apply them 
  • Attention to detail 
  • Proven ability to work independently
  • Strong communication skills
