Head Librarian, City of Newburyport Library, (Newburyport, MA)

The City of Newburyport is seeking an energetic and visionary Head Librarian (Director) to sustain the Newburyport Public Library’s vital role in the community. Located in northeast Massachusetts, Newburyport is a seaside city with a population of 18,289, and strong historic, artistic and cultural communities. As a member of the Merrimack Valley Library Consortium (MVLC), the Library had a total circulation of 253,523 and over 10,000 active borrowers in FY23.]

Reports to the Library Board of Directors and to its Chairman ex officio, the Mayor of Newburyport, the Head Librarian is responsible for the management of all library services and resources, including a staff of 19 full-time and 1 part-time employee, an operating budget of $1,489,349.87 and a 38,000 square foot historic building with a 2001 addition. The new Head Librarian will work with a capable and enthusiastic staff, and active and dedicated Board, a dynamic Friends of the Library organization to ensure the provision of high-quality services to a library supportive of the public. When appropriate, the Head Librarian will work with and schedule all volunteer projects. Our library proudly provides services beyond standard book lending, including a popular Library of Things, Archival Center, Home Delivery Services, and a wide variety of staff and community-led programs. The ideal candidate will have a proven track record in effective leadership in a library setting. They will have a positive attitude, an innovative spirit, integrity, flexibility, a sense of humor, and a genuine interest in people. Excellent leadership, communication and interpersonal skills are essential as is the ability to foster a culture that strives for excellence and promotes positive change. Applicant must possess a thorough knowledge of the principles and practices of public library administration, strategic planning, finance, technology trends, personnel administration, facility management, public relations and social media. The Library staff is in the AFSCME Union, understanding of unions and collective bargaining agreements is a must.

Qualifications:

Master of Library and Information Studies (MLIS) from an accredited ALA (American Library Association) institution, and seven years of progressively responsible experience in library administration required.

Salary:

  • $90,000 Estimated Starting Date: Late Summer/Early Fall 2023
