Librarian C—Government Documents Reference Librarian, State Library of Massachusetts, (Boston, MA)

Responsible for the acquisition, maintenance, and management of the State Library’s Massachusetts state documents, Massachusetts local documents, and federal documents depository collections. Provides reference and information services to patrons. Provides library orientations and trainings for state employees individually and in group settings and leads tours, creates programming and presentations to promote the library’s collections. Assist with collection development, maintenance, and space planning for other library collections. Assists with the curation of library displays. Shares in the creation of content for the library’s website, email newsletter, blog, and social media sites.

DETAILED STATEMENT OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Responsible for the acquisition, maintenance, and management of the State Library’s Massachusetts state and local documents collections, including the library’s collection of Massachusetts municipalities’ annual reports as mandated by M.G.L. ch.6 §39B. Oversees all state documents collection and acquisition policies. Responsible for maintaining and updating a listing for Massachusetts state agency contacts for publications and performs regular outreach to Massachusetts state agencies for mandated submissions to the State Library’s collections. Coordinates distribution of paper copies of Massachusetts state documents to designated depository libraries.
  2. Locate and acquire Massachusetts print and born-digital state documents cited in the news media and elsewhere, using electronic search and retrieval tools. Responsible for monitoring the Massachusetts electronic documents email box for documents and selects documents for cataloging and inclusion to the collections. Closely collaborate and communicate with state agencies to ensure state documents are submitted to the State Library in accordance with legal depository requirements.
  3. Responsible for the acquisition, maintenance, and control of Library’s federal documents depository collection by ensuring the State Library’s compliance with Federal Depository Library Program guidelines and preparing the self-study reports required by the FDLP. Research and follow best practices relating to management of federal government documents.
  4. Provides reference and information services to patrons by answering questions, retrieving materials,
    searching resources, forwarding requested documents, and composing correspondence. Follows policies and procedures of the Library in the Reference/Circulation Manual, along with general library policies. Works closely with the Library’s Special Collections Department and outside sources to reply to requests.
  5. Participates in providing library orientations, outreach, and trainings for state employees and leads tours, creates programming and presentations to promote the library’s collections. Assist with the curation of library displays.
  6. Assist with collection development by selecting materials in accordance with the State Library’s
    collection policy. Participate in space planning, inventory, and digitization projects. Share in stack and collection maintenance duties and library mail retrieval.
  7. Shares in regular creation of content for the library’s blog, email newsletter, and social media sites.
  8. With other library staff, assess collections for scanning and participate in scanning items for the library’s DSpace digital repository. Participate in uploading content to DSpace.
     
  9. Assists with interlibrary loan responsibilities.
  10. Maintains currency in the library profession by attending and participating in meetings, seminars, and training sessions. Participates on various State Library Teams.
  11. Performs other duties as assigned.
