GENERAL SUMMARY: Under the general supervision of the Head of Bibliographic Services, this position is responsible for processing and entering new material, creating reports, and other Bibliographic Services duties as assigned.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Under the general supervision of the Head of Bibliographic Services
● Data entry of new materials as assigned, including materials in both print and audiovisual formats, for all collection areas, including Adult, Young Adult and Juvenile
● Processes new material with appropriate stamps, labels, and packaging, as directed
● Assigns Dewey Decimal classification to nonfiction materials under the direction of the Head of the Department
● Responsible for creating reports, including weekly list of items with patron holds for selection, weekly list of older items to be pulled from adult new shelves, posts new titles on the library website weekly, and produces a monthly list of year-to-date circ stats for newly acquired items; creates other reports as needed
● Responsible for pulling no longer new material and updating item records
● At the request of the Department Head, provides instruction to volunteers assigned to the Department
● Other projects as assigned
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY: Some supervision and training of substitute librarians, aides, pages and volunteers in specific department operations, as required.
INDEPENDENT ACTION AND ACCOUNTABILITY: Under the general supervision of the Head of Bibliographic Services, works independently and in accordance with professional standards, defined procedures, priorities, and timetables, referring questions and problems to the Department Head, to prepare new materials for public use and to ensure collections are accurately represented in the library catalog. Errors would result in significant delays in making new materials available to the public and in the potential loss of materials, which would result in a loss of confidence of the general public and in adverse public relations for the town.
COMPETENCIES:
● Accuracy and attention to detail: well organized; ability to effectively prioritize tasks in a busy environment
● Familiarity with library cataloging or copy cataloging processes in accordance with network standards.
● Accurate typing/keyboarding skills; ability to use a variety of computer applications, including Excel and Sierra
● Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions
● Writing and speaking for effective communication
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
● Ability to operate a variety of electronic equipment on a regular basis, including but not limited to a keyboard / computer monitor, printers, copiers, and Library of Things tech items
● Ability to reach for items on high and low shelves, as required
● While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk and hear
● Substantial lifting, pushing, and carrying of library materials and computer equipment (up to 50 pounds), included bookcarts (170 pounds)
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
● Masters degree required
● Minimum one year public library experience in processing library materials
● Experience in using an Integrated Library System , as noted above, Sierra preferred
Seeking an experienced, professional librarian to join our busy Bibliographic Services Dept. Responsible for assisting the Head of Bibliographic Services with professional duties including classification of materials added to the collection, data entry and processing of materials, withdrawal of materials removed from the collections, tracking expenditures and producing fund reports and generating reports strategic to collection development. Position plays a role in collection development and may also provide instruction to volunteers. Other duties include potential shifts as backup on the adult Technology and Information Services desk.
The ideal candidate will be forward-thinking and familiar with current trends and best practices in public libraries.
Hours: 35 hours per week with benefits package.
Qualifications and Experience: A Masters degree in Library Science from an ALA accredited institution. Previous experience in Bibliographic or Technical Services departments in a public library preferable. Strong interpersonal and written and oral communication skills are essential. Ability to deal with all members of the staff and public in a courteous and tactful manner. Excellent reference skills for print, non-print, and electronic devices are required. Accuracy and attention to detail are essential.
Physical Requirements: Ability to operate a keyboard and view a computer monitor and other electronic devices on a regular basis. Ability to reach for items on high and low shelves, as needed. Required to talk and hear and list and move equipment and bookcarts.
Closing Date: July 5, 2023
Full Salary Range: $57,119-$83,389. Candidates can expect to start on the lower end to middle of the range.
