Assistant Archivist, Historic New England, (Boston, MA)

Historic New England seeks a full-time Assistant Archivist to work in its Library and Archives. The library and archival collections consist of more than 1.5 million items (photographs, architectural drawings, ephemera, art, prints and engravings, manuscripts, books, and institutional archives) documenting New England’s social, cultural, and architectural history. Information is shared with the public through an online collections catalogue, publications, social media, and via onsite appointments. 

Key Roles and Responsibilities: The Assistant Archivist is responsible for the following primary functions and other duties as assigned:

  • Work with the Library and Archives team to provide reference services in answering patron-inquiries both in-person and via email
  • Process, catalogue and preserve archival collections making them available online
  • Assist in collections management activities related to a collections move from the Otis House to temporary swing space in the West End
  • Working with the digital photographer to digitize images for online availability.
  • Write for Historic New England publications online and in print.
  • Participate in activities of professional archival organizations such as the New England Archivists Participate and in institutional initiatives.
  • Assist with digital asset initiatives.
  • Task force and special project participation as needed.
