ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

The Town of Yarmouth is searching for a Staff Librarian to join our Library team!

Working under the direct supervision of the Circulation Supervisor, the Staff Librarian Essential Functions include:

Performs readers’ advisory services and ready reference. Checks materials in and out, registers new patrons; answers telephone; assists patrons.

Identifies community need and makes recommendations regarding services, collections, and policies of Yarmouth Town Libraries. May plan and execute programming for adults. May process materials for shelving; mend materials, cover books; may classify and catalog library materials, both print and non-print. Refers unique inquiries to Supervisor or to Library Director. Initiates patrons to layout and use of the library. Creates bibliographies, read-alike suggestions, and other guides in anticipation of user demand. Creates displays to highlight services and resources. Teaches patrons how to use public computers. Assists with printing, scanning, faxing and use of electronic devices. Monitors use of and troubleshoots the public computers. Assists with information or materials requests; searches database and bibliographic sources; processes interlibrary loan requests and notifies patrons of arrival of materials. Performs miscellaneous keyboarding; develops publicity and promotion of library resources and materials; shelves library materials and periodically reads shelves; executes special projects with minimum supervision, assists in the training of volunteers, and teen page(s).

Assists with homebound and volunteer programs; helps to maintain workflow at the South Yarmouth Library and West Yarmouth Library; provides outreach to schools and builds relationships with community organizations and agencies.

Assists with the maintenance of statistical records and prepares reports as needed. Assumes responsibility for the building, including opening and closing, in the absence of senior staff. Maintains confidential patron information. Complies with OSHA safety regulations and implements the Town’s safety policies and procedures, ensuring safe working conditions and practices within the facility. Attends safety training for employees as required. Performs other duties as required or as situation dictates.

JOB ENVIRONMENT:

Work is performed under typical library conditions that encompass frequent interruptions and the need for a broad intellectual capacity. Work is subject to seasonal fluctuations and deadlines. Library hours require evening and weekend work in a rotation. Operates computers, printers, scanners, peripherals, multimedia workstations, digital devices, audio-visual equipment, and standard library equipment. Has constant contact with the public. Serves library users and the general public.

RECOMMENDED MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Bachelor’s Degree required; Master’s Degree in Library and Information Science preferred. Two years of library experience; or any equivalent combination of education, experience and training.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Physical effort required in carrying and shelving materials, and in performing other typical library functions. Frequent standing, walking, bending, reaching, and climbing. Ability to operate a keyboard at an efficient speed. Frequently required to sit and talk or hear, use hands to finger, handle, feel or operate objects, tools, or controls; and reach with hands and arms. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move materials weighing up to 30 pounds. Vision and hearing at or correctable to normal ranges.
