The City of Amesbury (estimated population 18,000), a dynamic Merrimack Valley community rich in tradition with a vibrant and expanding economic base, is seeking a strong candidate to serve as a part time Librarian for the Amesbury Public Library. This position is a generalist, working across public service departments on special projects, adult programming, and daily library tasks. They also provide reference services including technology assistance, readers advisory, and referring patrons to appropriate resources.
Hours of Work: 18 hours/week including one evening and Saturdays on rotation
Rate: $27.57/hour
Essential Duties and Responsibilities: Duties listed below are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work that may be performed. The omission of specific duties does not exclude them from the position if the work is similar, relates, or is a logical assignment to the position.
- Regularly scheduled reference desk hours, providing assistance to library patrons of all ages in location and using library materials and technology.
- Acts as backup and/or assists in planning, organizing, and promoting adult programs when required.
- Daily library tasks include shelving, shelf-reading, and re-stocking displays.
- Assists Head of Archives with local history projects when required including: processing archival collections; genealogy research; and scanning archival material.
- Backup coverage for circulation desk staff when required.
- Other duties as assigned.
- Required Skills and Qualities:
- Strong public service commitment.
- Excellent computer skills, particularly in O365 environment and Windows operating systems.
- Familiarity with integrated library systems, preferably Symphony.
- Broad knowledge of personal computers and their applications in a library setting.
- Ability to develop effective working relationships with department personnel and with the general public.
- High degree of flexibility and the ability to multi-task and frequently change focus
- Effective time management skills.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills.
- Ability to work as a team member and independently
- Good interpersonal skills, friendly manner, and ability to work in a busy customer service environment
- Work independently with minimal daily instruction.
Minimum Qualifications: A Master’s Degree in Library Science in a program accredited by the American Library Association. 1-3 years’ library experience (someone in process pursuing their MLS will be considered). Experience in customer service preferred.
Work Environment and Physical Requirements: Must be able to handle varying levels of noise and activities. Employees must be able to remain in a stationary position 50% of the time. This position requires the employee to communicate, detect, converse with, discern, express oneself, exchange information. The ability to communicate information and ideas so others will understand. Must be able to exchange accurate information in these situations. This position requires the employee to detect, determine, perceive, identify, recognize, judge, observe, inspect, estimate and assess. The ability to observe details at close range within a few feet of the observer. This employee frequently moves boxes up to 20 pounds across office areas for various needs, including having to lift, carry, push, pull, or
otherwise move objects. This position is primarily conducted indoors.
