Library Assistant, Tufts University Hirsh Health Sciences Library, (Boston, MA)

Overview

The Hirsh Health Sciences Library provides collections and services to meet the information needs of the staff, students, and faculty of the Boston Health Sciences Campus. Located in Boston’s Chinatown/Theater District, the Campus is comprised of the Dental School, the Medical School (including programs in Public Health and Professional Programs), the Friedman School of Nutrition Science and Policy, as well as the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences, and the Human Nutrition Research Center on Aging (HNRCA) at Tufts University.

The Collections Management Department selects, acquires and catalogs all library materials, including databases, books, and journals, both print and electronic, providing access to Tufts users on and off-campus. The department also maintains the library’s book and journals stacks, including an off-site storage facility.

What You’ll Do

The Collections Management Assistant is an in-person position reporting to the Head of Collections Management. They are responsible for collection activities critical for the Library, to effectively serve the faculty, staff and students.

Responsibilities include:

  • Receives physical books and provides the copy cataloging, processing, labeling, and shelving of those books
  • Maintains current new book displays
  • Keeps current the library web page of loanable equipment, the LibGuide on Graphic Medicine titles, and any documentation of the position’s procedures and workflows
  • Checks in the library’s current journals, oversees the shelving and reshelving of journals and books, and assists with training of any student shelvers
  • Assists the Electronic Resources/Serials Librarian in maintaining the accuracy of electronic book collections by cataloging titles and testing links
  • Works with Circulation staff to determine the accuracy of both reserve and equipment items behind the desk
  • Supports interlibrary loan requests by accessing and maintaining off-site storage of physical journals
  • Serves on library committees as needed
  • Staffs the Library Service Desk for four hours a week and occasionally, as needed

Basic Requirements:

  • Knowledge and skills typically acquired through the completion of a college degree and 1+ year of experience
  • Proficiency with MS Windows, Microsoft Office Suite, including Excel
  • Ability to lift up to 25lbs with or without accommodation
  • Essential function includes ability to push and pull book carts/trucks
  • Ability to work with and handle dusty books, journals and older materials

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience working in a library’s technical services environment
  • Familiarity with online library system Ex Libris Alma, OCLC’s Connexion, NLM classification, DOCLINE and MeSH
  • Experience working on time-sensitive projects
  • Supervisory experience of managing student workers

Pay Range

Minimum $19.30, Midpoint $23.15, Maximum $27.00

Salary is based on related experience, expertise, and internal equity; generally, new hires can expect pay between the minimum and midpoint of the range.
