Technician Librarian III, Somerville Library West Branch, Somerville, MA

The Somerville Public Library is seeking a friendly, detail-oriented, public service-minded individual to join the West Branch. This position is divided between youth services and circulation and will support programming and the daily operation of a busy children’s room and circulation desk. The ideal candidate will have experience working with youth of all ages and have strong organizational and interpersonal skills.

DUTIES:

Under the direction of the Manager of Branch Services and in cooperation with the branch Youth Services Librarian:

  • Supports selection of materials and collection development for youth of all ages.
  • Plans and executes programs as well as arranges performances and activities by professionals.
  • Staffs children’s room desk and assists with reference questions.
  • Plans and implement school visits and neighborhood outreach.
  • Staffs circulation desk, providing accurate and exceptional service to the public.
  • Performs clerical Library duties in circulation, receiving new materials, checking library materials in and out, registering new library users and processing cards, and shelving books
  • Assists the public with basic information requests and with information regarding library policies in an efficient and pleasant manner.
  • Assists the public with use of Library computers, printer, and copier.
  • Fills in at other desks and library locations as needed.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in education or a related field plus one-year experience in a public library, circulation or youth services preferred.
  • Demonstrated ability to provide excellent customer service to all library visitors
  • Ability to work with youth of all ages.
  • Working knowledge of library circulation systems and office software (email, word processing, spreadsheets, etc.) preferred
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Ability to communicate effectively and work collaboratively across all departments
  • Ability to push and pull book carts, lift cartons, and carry books
  • Ability to lift 40 lbs., bend, kneel, and stoop
  • Ability to speak two or more languages a plus

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

The work environment involves everyday discomforts typical of offices, with occasional exposure to outside elements. Noise or physical surroundings may be distracting, but conditions are generally not unpleasant.

PHYSICAL AND MENTAL REQUIREMENTS:

Physical Skills
Little or no physical demands are required to perform the work. Work effort principally involves sitting to perform work tasks, with intermittent periods of stooping, walking, and standing. There may also be some occasional lifting of objects such as books, office equipment and computer paper (up to 30 lbs.). Job requires ability to bend, lift and carry library materials and pull book carts (up to 50lbs.)

Motor Skills
Duties are largely mental rather than physical, but the job may occasionally require minimal motor skills for activities such as moving objects, operating a telephone system, computer and/or most other office equipment, typing and/or word processing, filing, and sorting.

Visual Skills
Visual demands include constantly reading documents in print and on the computer, for general understanding and for analytical purposes.
