Children’s Library Assistant (Part-Time), M. G. Parker Memorial Library, Dracut, MA

Job Summary

Under the supervision of the Children’s Librarian, the Library Assistant provides exemplary customer service to families, children, caregivers, and other users of the Children’s Room and its resources. The Library Assistant also assists in the planning and hosting of programs for its intended audience. 

The salary is $15.16/hr.

Essential Functions

  • Assist children, parents, and teachers in finding suitable reading material for the child’s age, abilities, and preferences 
  • Plan, conduct, and assist with programming for children, including but not limited to, story times, crafts programs, summer reading programs, summer activities 
  • Assist children through grade 6 and parents in finding both print and electronic information. 
    • Assist children and parents in computer usage. 
    • Process requests for patrons for materials not available in Dracut. 
    • Supervise computer use by children. 
    • Monitor behavior of children to ensure the safety and rights of patrons when in the Children’s Room. 

Supervision

Works under the general direction of the Children’s Librarian, according to established procedures and departmental policies and standards; duties require independent judgement and initiative. 

May supervise volunteers occasionally. 

Qualifications

Minimum of an Associates’ Degree; two years of library experience or customer service experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Previous experience with children in library, school, or similar environment preferred.

Work Environment

  • Part-time, 18 hours per week, union position with benefits for salary only.
  • Regular schedule includes weekend and evening hours.
  • Work is performed in library conditions; work is affected by seasonal fluctuations, such as the school calendar and seasonal programs; The employee operates computers, fax, scanner, copier, and other library and office equipment
  • The employee has access to confidential patron records, and circulation information
  • Errors could result in delay of service to patrons, monetary loss, or damage to library equipment
