Burns & McDonnell seeks an innovative and collaborative librarian for the Metadata & Cataloging Librarian position. They will be responsible for managing and overseeing all library cataloging and metadata functions, including implementing effective workflows, metadata creation and maintenance, bibliographic authority control, evaluation of applications and tools and quality control.

Additionally, the Metadata & Cataloging Librarian position will collaborate with the larger Quality team to incorporate and develop metadata in Knowledge Management (KM) efforts for the company.

This position will be an in-office role located at our World Headquarters in Kansas City.

  • Perform analysis, remediation, and normalization of metadata in library catalog.
  • Adhere to cataloging and metadata standards according to national and local standards and guidelines.
  • Create, edit, and maintain bibliographic data for library collections, focusing on problem solving for non-standard items.
  • Develop and maintain procedures and workflows for all cataloging and metadata efforts, working to resolve problems arising from obsolete or incorrect information appearing in bibliographic records.
  • Provide guidance on metadata creation for KM efforts across the company in conjunction with the Quality team and other groups.
  • Enhance cataloging of electronic resources, including integrating resources, e-books, electronic journals, and licensed databases.
  • Perform complex copy or original cataloging for individual resources as needed.
  • Perform reference duties.
  • Keep up to date with developments in cataloging standards and trends, apply new rules, interpretations, and techniques as appropriate.
  • Actively participate in library planning, initiatives, and the formulation of library policies.
  • All other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Masters degree in Library and Information Science (MLIS) from an ALA-accredited institution.
  • 1 years’ experience of progressively responsible metadata and/or cataloging management in libraries strongly preferred
  • Passion for exploration of metadata topics and developments in both libraries and KM
  • Successful experience completing knowledge management, data curation, or similar digital projects.
  • Ability to perform complex research for scientific and technical requests that are often confidential and time sensitive Knowledge of Digital Object Identifier (DOI) and copyright law are essential to success.
  • Knowledge of design standards, engineering, or construction projects and/or scientific or technical background is a plus.
  • Experience in corporate library environment preferred
  • Library technical services or similar background a plus.
  • Excellent attention to detail and time-management skills.
  • Ability to work well with minimal supervision.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Ability to work in a digital environment
