Teen Services Librarian II, Boston Public Library, Boston, MA

Job Description

Under supervision, and within the framework of Library policies and practices, to assume responsibility over services to a diverse population (characteristic to an urban setting) with emphasis on service to teens and to perform professional work requiring application of professional knowledge of literature, bibliographic sources and services with a concentration on teens.

Reports To: Teen Central Team Leader, or ranking staff member.

Supervises: As assigned, professional and non-professional staff members.

Responsibilities

  • Initiates, plans, and implements the Library’s program of service to teens through personal consultations, reference and readers’ advisory services, outreach and programs.
  • Develops and implements activities to stimulate use of the Library’s resources by the community, especially through schools and agencies which serve teens.
  • Plans and conducts comprehensive programming for teens and those serving the teen population, provides bibliographic instruction to classes visiting the Library, conducts book talks, facilitates book discussion groups, and participates in the BPL Teen Volunteer Program.
  • Performs readers’ advisory services and difficult or involved reference for the general public.
  • Provides instruction to increase patrons’ skill in the use of book resources and electronic databases.
  • Manages, as delegated, program funds assigned.
  • Participates in the development of the teen collection and manages assigned materials budget.
  • Compiles annotated lists and bibliographies involving book and non-book materials.
  • Assists in recommending and/or planning changes in service or new services for teens/young adults. 
  • Assists in training professional and support staff. 
  • May be responsible for oral presentations and written reports on activities within the department.
  • May be responsible for day-to-day operations of the department in the absence of the Teen Central Team Leader or other ranking staff member.                                    
  • Actively participates in system-wide committees, training and other professional activities.
  • Performs other related and/or comparable duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Education

  • Bachelor’s degree from a recognized college or university and a master’s degree in library science from an accredited library school. Courses in teen and young adult literature and/or programming taken for credit at an accredited library school.
  • Other experience working with youth/teens is desirable.
  • In exceptional instances, specialized education, training and/or experience, may be substituted for part or all of the educational requirements.

Experience

  • Two years of pertinent professional library experience or any equivalent combination of education, experience, and training sufficient to indicate ability to do the work.
  • Broad knowledge of teen and young adult literature including bibliographic tools and sources pertaining to teen literature and work; demonstrated knowledge of the techniques of programming for teens; interest in teens and in library work with teens; willingness and ability to develop strong interactive community relationships; willingness to assume responsibility and carry out assignments independently; good oral and written communication skills as well as the ability to search the Internet and other electronic databases; ability to work well with staff and public; initiative, dependability, good judgment, tact, courtesy. 

Proficiency in a language other than English desirable.

Requirements

  • Residency – Must be a resident of the City of Boston upon the first day of hire.
  • CORI – Must successfully clear a Criminal Offenders Record Information check with the City of Boston.
