Metro-Boston Library Network Administrator, Boston Public Library – Director’s Office, Boston, MA

Job Description

Responsible for the development and administration including advisory services, planning, member support, and network services to the members of the Metro-Boston Library Network.  Works in collaboration with the IT Department to coordinate delivery of automated services.  Participates in development, implementation, and administration of Boston Public Library’s program of service.

Responsibilities

Essential Functions

  • Manages Metro-Boston Library Network service delivery with BPL’s IT, Technical Services, and Library Services Departments, including the development and management of the network Plan of Service, budget, program evaluation, statistical reporting; ensures that Metro-Boston Library Network Long Range Plan, Collections Plan and Technology Plan are current and meet Massachusetts Board of Library Commissioners’ requirements.
  • Responsible for member relations for the Metro-Boston Library Network, including convening and chairing the Metro-Boston Library Network Policy Advisory Group and other Metro-Boston Library Network policy and service delivery development and evaluation groups, acting as point of contact for members regarding training and cataloging issues, and integrated library system policy and procedure issues.
  • Acts as Metro-Boston Library Network (MBLN) liaison to participating libraries to ensure effective collaboration among all participating institutions. Responsible for ensuring system-wide, consistent application of customer service policies among all MBLN participating libraries.
  • Works closely with Boston Public Schools and the development of school library members for MBLN.
  • Is responsible for and works with IT and Finance Department on the Federal E-Rate program.
  • Is responsible for and works with BPL IT Department and MBLN member libraries on technology assessment, planning and annual Technology Plan development and execution.
  • Is responsible for ensuring the Integrated Library System and dependent systems meet and serve the Metro-Boston Library Network-wide needs and service plans.
  • Works with BPL Cataloging department to insure members libraries collections are properly incorporated into the shared Integrated Library System.
  • Provides overall strategic development and the deployment of network services. Works closely with partnering institutions and libraries and proactively responds to changing needs.
  • Works with IT Department and Finance Department on technology grant development and implementation.
  • Represents MBLN at various regional, state and other meetings. Prepares reports to library administration, MBLC and other organizations as required.
  • Responds to library requests for assistance and information on a variety of topics, including, but not limited to, administration, planning, youth services, technical services, facilities, technology, public relations, collection development, service development, and policy development.
  • Oversees Network member development.
  • Provides information on services through workshops, consultation, on-site visits, correspondence, etc.
  • Assists in needs analyses of libraries to assist in the development and implementation of new library services and preparation of reports.
  • Works with the Business office and IT to manage the program budget and expenditures for MBLN program.

  • Ability to adapt to changing needs of member libraries.
  • Ability to work independently and to initiate proposals for implementation.
  • Proficiency with MSWord, Publisher, Power Point, and Excel.

Qualifications

Education – A bachelor’s degree from a recognized college or university and a master’s degree in library science from an ALA accredited library school. Relevant subject knowledge and/or specialized training required.  School Librarian Certification desired. In exceptional instances, training and/or experience may be substituted for part or all of the educational requirements.

Proficiency in a language other than English desirable.

Experience – Seven years of appropriate library experience or any equivalent combination of education, experience and training sufficient to indicate ability to do the work. Technology skills appropriate to perform the duties of the job. Experience working with library technology desired. Experience with library cataloging principles desired.

Requirements

  • Project Management skills desired.
  • Valid Massachusetts Driver’s license and ability to travel outside the City required.
  • Residency – Must be a resident of the City of Boston upon the first day of hire.
  • CORI – Must successfully clear a Criminal Offenders Record Information check with the City of Boston.
