Children’s Librarian, Laconia Public Library, Laconia, NH

Position Description

The Laconia Public Library is seeking a creative, organized, and engaged Children’s Librarian to: oversee the daily operations of the Children’s Department; maintain a warm, welcoming, and inspiring environment for children ages birth to 12 and their caregivers; promote, implement, and evaluate programs; maintain a high-quality collection; collaborate with the Teen Librarian to coordinate library services for youth; and, cultivate relationships with area schools and community organizations.

Schedule: This is a full-time position requiring 40 hours per week, including one evening per week and alternating Saturdays.

Compensation: $22.26 – $25.48 per hour depending upon qualifications and an excellent benefits package including participation in the NH Retirement System.

Qualifications

  • A passion for engaging and inspiring children of all ages.
  • Considerable knowledge of child development as it pertains to literacy.
  • Working knowledge and appreciation of children’s literature.
  • Commitment to providing outstanding customer service, at times under trying circumstances.
  • Excellent communication, both orally and in writing.
  • Proficiency with current technology (software, applications, devices) and willingness and ability to adapt to evolving technological environments.

Education and Experience: Qualified candidates will have a Master’s Degree in Library Science and a minimum of two years’ experience in children’s library services, or equivalent combination of training and experience that provides similar knowledge, ability, and skills.

Duties

  • Provides supervision of Library Technicians, Pages and volunteers. Participates in the training of new staff.
  • Participates in the daily activities of the library, including circulation.
  • Manages the budget allocation for children’s collections and programming.
  • Maintains an age appropriate, high quality collection in a variety of reading levels and formats.
  • Promotes, implements, and evaluates programs.
  • Collects and reports statistics on program participation.
  • Acts as a liaison to schools and other community organizations serving children to promote library services.
  • Provides reader’s advisory for children, caregivers, and teachers.
  • Assists patrons with using the library’s public computers, software, Internet browsers, databases, and electronic media.
  • Attends workshops and conferences to strengthen skills, to keep abreast of trends and changing library practices, and to contribute to the library profession.

Physical Requirements

Must be able to push or pull carts, do a moderate amount of bending, squatting, lifting (up to 40
pounds), stretching and standing for extended periods of time.
