Job Description
The Associate Director for Research performs a wide range of research assignments in support of the
College’s development goals and general advancement initiatives. Reporting to the Director of
Stewardship, Research, and Planning, the position will conduct prospect research and prepare profiles on existing and prospective donors.
Incumbent should be well-versed in the use and application of Raiser’s Edge and various prospect
research and wealth screening tools and methods. S/he will be able to interpret wealth screening and
research data in a sound methodical manner in order to query, identify, rank and prioritize prospective
major gift donors.
Incumbent will keep up-to-date on prospect research best practices and use of research tools to expand prospect pools and determine prospects’ capacity, philanthropic interest and connections.
At the direction and supervision of the Director of Stewardship, Research, and Planning, this position
will prepare research and participate in prospect review sessions for the Senior Vice President for
Advancement, Assistant Vice President for Major Gifts, gift officers, and advancement volunteers. S/he
will contribute to discussions about prospect management strategies to better cultivate and solicit
principal and major gift prospects. S/he will organize and report findings from research in effective
written communication, as appropriate to the request or project. Incumbent will work with Advancement Services colleagues to ensure that research data is entered into Raiser’s Edge and kept current.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Write and produce prospect profiles and research summaries in support of the College’s
advancement program. - Work with the Director of Stewardship, Research, and Planning to support research needed for
capital and special-purpose campaigns at all stages, from feasibility study to active fundraising. - Help standardize and coordinate: methods and criteria for prospect research, evaluation and
review; procedures for preparing written materials and reports for information distribution and
retrieval; compilation of source documents and supporting materials; addition of research
information to Advancement database records. - Develop, update and maintain comprehensive information files on principal, individual and
major gift prospects and donors. - Research and report information on individual prospects and corporations needed for cultivation
and solicitation strategies; prepare and present reports in a succinct and effective format; retrieve
information through a variety of research methods; and ensure confidentiality of information. - Initiate new areas for research to discover new prospective donors; screen and evaluate status of
existing prospects; review and monitor media for news/developments of potential interest to
Advancement. - Work with the Associate Director of Donor Communications and Stewardship to provide
information required for event briefings, stewardship reports, proposals, and other needs. - Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree and at least three years of related experience in development research, prospect development or relevant field, preferably in a higher education setting.
- Proficiency in Raiser’s Edge database, including Research Point.
- Experience and familiarity with prospect research and analysis, including the ability to navigate and effectively use online research tools.
- Excellent writing, editing and verbal skills, efficient investigation of questions; effective organization of information (prospect report preparation); intellectual depth and curiosity.
- Initiative to approach tasks creatively and to complete assignments on deadline while managing multiple tasks simultaneously.
- Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with Advancement professionals.
- Demonstrated ability to maintain proprietary information in a secure and confidential manner.
- Membership in NEDRA and APRA preferred, but not required.
- Ability to adjust to changing priorities and meet deadlines.
- Demonstrated ability to analyze, synthesize, and present data from a wide variety of sources.
