Job Description

The Boston University Libraries are seeking a Reference Assistant to provide excellent reference and informational services to library users across the BU Libraries system, in person as well as virtually. The Reference Assistant provides general support for reference activities including maintaining weekly schedules and library instruction calendars and recording and maintaining reference and instruction statistics. The Reference Assistant also provides general user services as part of their responsibilities for desk staffing. 

Responsibilities

  • Assists students, faculty, and staff with research by suggesting research strategies, locating relevant sources and answering general questions, in person and virtually. Determines when to refer complex questions to reference librarians. Records and maintains reference and instruction statistics.
  • Assists reference librarians with creating, updating and maintaining research guides, tutorials, and other instruction and consultation resources in supported formats.
  • Assists with training student employees and provides backup for User Services. Assistants and other library staff for the provision of user services.
  • Assists with various administrative tasks including ordering and maintaining office supply inventory, preparing and maintaining weekly schedules and library instruction calendars.
  • Additional duties in line with Libraries priorities as assigned including assisting with special projects.

Required Skills

  • Bachelor’s degree
  • 1-3 years of relevant experience
