Position Summary:
The role of the Speech Language Pathologist is to support Carroll’s diagnostic and prescriptive approach to teaching. Rather than provide direct therapeutic services in a “pull-out” model, the Speech Language Pathologist (SLP) continuously consults and collaborates with our lower school classroom teachers. The SLP’s supports focus on receptive and expressive language, social pragmatics, executive function, and self-advocacy. The SLP works collaboratively across multiple teams to strengthen students’ abilities to take an active and strategic approach to learning while valuing each student’s voice, experience, and history. The SLP must believe in collaboration and understand the importance of relationship-building when helping students find success.
Responsibilities:
- Work collaboratively with teachers, students, and families to uphold the mission of the school
- Provide push-in support to students with LBLD in grades 1-5 to ensure access to classroom content. Support areas include, but are not limited to: listening comprehension, expressive language, word finding, executive functioning, social pragmatics, and self-advocacy.
- Develop curricula and provide additional intervention for students with additional communication challenges including: receptive and expressive language, executive functioning, and social pragmatics.
- Consult and collaborate with classroom teachers to ensure students are best-supported in their classrooms.
- Work with families to understand the profile of their child and foster collaboration between home and school.
- Consult regularly with outside SLP providers to ensure generalization to the school setting.
- Support admissions team by screening prospective students.
- Provide families education and counseling about student profiles and the impact of their profile on educational programming
- Participate in team meetings and child study process
- Informally assess students to determine ability to engage in classroom activities with varying levels of SLP support
- Summarize outside evaluations and communicate important student information to appropriate adults in the community
- Consults on various aspects of the Language curriculum development
Requirements
Qualifications:
- BA/BS, MS Speech-Language Pathology
- Massachusetts License in Speech-Language and Hearing
- ASHA Certificate of Clinical Competence for Speech-Language Pathology (CCC-SLP) (strong CF candidates will be considered)
- Experience in delivery of Speech and Language services in the classroom environment and working with multidisciplinary teams
- Knowledge and understanding of dyslexia/language based learning differences and individualizing according to student needs
- Ability to use a variety of instructional strategies appropriate for teaching students from diverse backgrounds with different learning styles and needs
- Has the ability to:
- Convey ideas clearly both orally and in writing.
- Communicate effectively with parents, students, teachers, and administrators, especially about program and student needs
- Manage time, set priorities, be flexible
- Integrate data from multiple sources to make clinical judgements
- Value working as part of a team and making contributions to a shared vision of the best possible learning outcomes for students
