Professor of Practice – Future of Libraries, Distinguished Practitioner in Residence, Information School, University of Washington, Seattle, WA

Description

The University of Washington Information School (iSchool) is a leader in education and research on the future of archives, libraries, and librarianship. We seek a creative, forward-thinking Professor of Practice to contribute to this area by bringing their experiences and insights as a library practitioner.

The Professor of Practice will serve as a bridge between academia and the library profession and will lead the way towards enhancing the education of future librarians. They will be able to contribute to the teaching mission of the iSchool in several ways: by teaching courses in the MLIS program; by revising current core courses; by integrating some of the iSchool’s cross-disciplinary courses into the MLIS curriculum; and by developing new courses and specializations related to their areas of expertise and interest, helping to shape the MLIS curriculum to better reflect the needs of the future of libraries.

The Professor of Practice will also have the opportunity to bring their vision, expertise, and leadership experience to bear on a particular aspect of the library field to which they wish to contribute new ideas and knowledge in the form of a practice-based research or design project. This may involve engagement with students, other faculty, and other institutions, depending on the scope and nature of the project, but the results will be made available to the field through presentations, publications, and other dissemination methods appropriate to the work.

The UW Information School is dedicated to hiring faculty that will enhance our inclusion, diversity, equity, access and sovereignty (IDEAS) mission and vision through their research, teaching, and service. As information systems and institutions serve increasingly diverse and global constituencies, it is vital to understand the ways in which differences in gender, class, race, ethnicity, religious affiliation, national and cultural boundaries, national origin, worldview, intellectual origin, ability, and other identities can both divide us and offer us better ways of thinking and working. The Information School faculty are committed to preparing professionals who work in an increasingly diverse and global society by promoting equity and justice for all individuals, actively working to eliminate barriers and obstacles created by institutional discrimination.

The successful candidate will join a broad-based, inclusive Information School, whose faculty members pursue their scholarship, teaching, and service across multiple degree programs and are committed to the values of leadership, innovation, and diversity. Positive factors for consideration include experience in public and/or state libraries, or public-facing roles in other libraries. The University of Washington is an institution that encourages inclusive research and community outreach, situated between the Puget Sound and Lake Washington, in the city of Seattle, on the traditional territories of the Coast Salish people. Seattle is a rapidly growing, dynamic, and diverse metropolitan area with a leading technology sector and vibrant civic sector. Applicants may find further information about the Information School at ischool.uw.edu.

This position is a two year full-time 9-month appointment anticipated at the rank of Professor of Practice, not tenure eligible. This position has an anticipated start date of September 1, 2023.

The base salary for this position will be $12,666 – $13,888 per month ($114,000 – $125,000 per 9-month academic year), commensurate with experience and qualifications, or as mandated by a U.S. Department of Labor prevailing wage determination.
