Metadata Operations Specialist, Great Blue Hill (GBH), Boston, MA

Job Overview

Under the direction of the Associate Director/AAPB Project Manager, the Metadata  Specialist will be responsible for designing, testing, deploying, evaluating and refining tools, processes, guidelines, workflows, and presentation and use of human-generated  metadata as well as for metadata generated through CLAMS (Computational Linguistics Applications for Multi-media Services) for the American Archive of Public Broadcasting.

Since 2019, GBH has collaborated with the Brandeis Lab for Linguistics and Computation to develop CLAMS. The platform integrates open-sources machine learning tools and algorithms in support of programmatic capture of metadata from audiovisual files, such as speech-to-text transcripts, identification of bars and tone, text on screen (slates, credits, lower thirds), and named entities.

Responsibilities

  • Creation and upkeep of documentation around CLAMS tools and workflows
  • Evaluating collections to determine which tools are appropriate to run on them
  • Developing and overseeing a queue for processing of collections in a prioritized manner
  • Creating tool chains and deploying pipelines on collections
  • Overseeing quality control of CLAMS output
  • Overseeing metadata mapping/delivery to metadata systems and public websites in collaboration with the Archives Technology Manager, developers and systems analyst.
  • In collaboration with Archivists, evaluating, advising and updating guidelines for inventory spreadsheets, data modeling, human cataloging, and metadata searchability and presentation on the AAPB public website.
  • Collaborating with other GBH Archives staff and external partners on CLAMS tool and pipeline evaluation and refinement.
  • Contributing to long-term planning around the incorporation of CLAMS work into core GBH Archives operations
  • Coordinating work with the Brandeis team for deliverables and timelines

Skill Set

  • Knowledge of metadata standards including PBCore
  • Familiarity with Excel spreadsheets and XML
  • Familiarity with machine learning, artificial intelligence processing multi-media data, and Natural Language Processing (NLP) concepts, tools, and methods
  • Experience working with the command line and simple scripting/programming
  • Excellent organizational, prioritization, and time-management skills
  • Comfortable working with technical experts and colleagues in other disciplines (i.e., computational linguistics)
  • Enthusiasm for public media and its history
  • Demonstrated interest/investment in audiovisual archives
  • Experience collaborating with remote partners on projects across multiple institutions

Education

Library and Information Science or computer science degree required
