Arlington County’s Public Library is seeking an innovative and experienced Cataloging and Metadata Senior Librarian to perform professional senior level librarian work and assist with the supervision of the daily operations of the cataloging and metadata work unit within the Collections and Access Division. This position supervises the Cataloging and Metadata work unit by planning, organizing, assigning, reviewing, and evaluating the work of employees and volunteers in services provided.

Specific duties include:

  • Managing and coordinating the work of Library Associates, Library Assistants, and volunteers;
  • Assisting with the supervision of daily operations of the Cataloging and Metadata work unit by enforcing industry and library standards, providing training and evaluating work performances;
  • Providing cataloging and bibliographic instruction to staff and patrons and ensuring the proper use and care of materials, equipment and facilities;
  • Planning, arranging and managing the workflow of new materials in the department and overseeing the timely release of materials to the public;
  • Assigning tasks to subordinates and helping them resolve complex work problems; and
  • Managing volunteer operations in support of library donations.

The ideal candidate will have the following:

  • Experience as a hands-on manager, problem solver and strategic thinker;
  • The ability to manage multiple tasks, understand and focus on County-wide and Library system-wide priorities, work successfully within a team, and communicate effectively; and
  • An awareness of current Cataloging trends in public libraries, with technology, and a forward-thinking mindset with proven experience as an innovator.

Selection Criteria

Minimum: 

  • Master’s Degree in Library Science or Library & Information Science from an ALA accredited college or university; and
  • Three years in a public library setting that includes one year of experience as a professional librarian in a cataloging and metadata unit.

Desirables: Preference will be given to applicants with experience in one or more of the following:

  • Managing public library cataloging services for a culturally diverse customer population;
  • Direct supervision and evaluation of staff performance;
  • Developing or re-imagining cataloging and metadata services; and or
  • Working cross-departmentally to collaborate on a major initiative, project, or service.

Work location and hours of work: Full-time, 40 hours per week including some evening and weekend work. Actual work schedule is determined by the needs of the work location; assignment location could change over time. The current vacancy is at Central Library, 1015 Quincy St., Arlington, VA 22201.
