Graduate Student Researcher, Justice, Equity, and Transformation (JET) Office, Massachusetts College of Art and Design, Boston, MA

Job Description

Massachusetts College of Art and Design’s Justice, Equity, and Transformation Office seeks a graduate student researcher for “Mapping Black Presence,” a project of the college which seeks to document and memorialize the presence of Black people on campus throughout the college’s 150 year history. Modeled after UMass Amherst’s Black Presence Project, MassArt plans to create a dynamic website and develop ancillary programming that contextualizes the Black students, faculty, and staff who have contributed to the culture of MassArt. Understanding that the history is both proud and fraught, MassArt believes that the documentation will serve as a reminder of how far we have come, and how much work we have left to do.

This work will require being on campus in Boston several times.

Responsibilities

The researcher will explore the school’s archives, including those belonging to the Commonwealth of Massachusetts and the Massachusetts Historical Society. As a public institution, it is important to recognize the context within which MassArt exists. The researcher will be expected to conduct interviews with students, staff, and faculty, both current and former, guided by a small campus committee. It is expected that this project will require roughly 10 hours per week, and take a semester to complete. The rate will be $22 an hour. The deliverable should be a written report along with any audio and video files of interviews conducted during the course of the semester.
