Audiovisual Archivist, Ohio History Connection, (Columbus, Ohio)

Position Summary:

The Audiovisual Archivist is responsible for managing, storing, using, and interpreting audiovisual collections and ensures that the practices that guide their work adhere to organizational standards for ethics, cultural responsiveness, and equity.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Access and Preservation

  • Actively grow the audiovisual collections to expand the inclusion of Ohioans and Ohio stories through active and passive collecting, cataloging, and deaccessioning born digital and physical audiovisual materials.
  • Provide access to the audiovisual collections while following best practices for long-term preservation by providing instruction on the correct handling to staff and researchers, format migration expertise, and recommended mounting and display durations for loans and exhibits.
  • Work in tandem with Collections Management staff to provide custodial care to the audiovisual collections, including providing input on best storage practices for preservation and assisting with environmental monitoring and mitigation.
  • Provide regular general reference services (primarily audiovisual) to onsite and remote researchers. Respond to public, professional, and scholarly inquiries.
  • Generate discovery content for audiovisual collections, including creating descriptive metadata, conducting inventories, and editing and maintaining relevant discovery tools.

Planning and Execution

  • Manage large-scale projects, including processing and preservation planning, and assist with batch file manipulation.
  • Work cooperatively with Reference Archivists, State Archives staff, and Collections Management on the projects and management of the stacks.

Advocacy and Outreach

  • Represent Archives & Libraries through active participation in professional archival organizations.
  • Work with site management partner staff on collections guidance, issues or questions.
  • Actively participate in and provide information for educational and outreach programming and digital projects.
  • Actively participate in the exhibit development process as a content and material type expert by conducting research, writing exhibit text, selecting items for the exhibit, and/or providing recommendations for mounting.
  • Provide subject area content and recommend collections to fulfill media requests through the Marketing and Communications team.

Education and Experience:

  • Master’s degree in Library Information and Science from an accredited university OR equivalent work experience in a related field and a minimum of five years experience working reference and/or with collections in libraries, museums, or a related field. Five to seven years of equivalent work experience plus one year of direct work experience in a library or archives will be considered in place of the degree or experience requirements.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of current audiovisual collections best practices.
  • Experience curating and managing audiovisual collections.
  • Experience creating and delivering public programs on a variety of platforms.
  • Experience with collections management software such as Archivespace.
  • Ability to use Microsoft Office software suite and database programs.
  • Familiarity with two-dimensional scanning materials, such as documents and photographic materials.
  • Experience with cataloging standards and vocabulary
