The Cataloging and Metadata Librarian works to ensure students and faculty have access to all items in the James. C. Kirkpatrick Library collections. The position enables reliable discovery of library materials through data quality and integrity in the cataloging system and by managing electronic resources cataloging, and leading departmental physical cataloging priorities. The position performs original and complex cataloging, as well as record maintenance for all formats of materials. The Cataloging and Metadata Librarian identifies and addresses metadata remediation needs, as well as the adoption of new or updated standards and vocabularies in support of James C. Kirkpatrick Libraries’ commitment to incorporating social justice into our work, focusing on the James C. Kirkpatrick Libraries’ diversity, equity, inclusion, and anti-racist efforts. The position will be expected to actively engage and participate in the development, application, and assessment of best practices, policies, standards, and workflows to support library operations and ensure optimal discovery of the Libraries’ collections. The Cataloging and Metadata Librarian is expected to work collaboratively with other librarians and staff. It is expected that faculty librarians actively engage in teamwork, shared governance, and library outreach activities.
Qualifications:
- Master’s degree from an ALA-accredited program in library/information science or equivalent information management graduate degree.
- Computer skills- Word Processing, Presentation, Spreadsheet, Other – Python and SQL preferred.
- Three (3) or more years’ experience in a library technical services/collection management environment required including two (2) or more years’ experience in cataloging and two (2) or more years’ experience with any of the following: OCLC, MARC, AACR2, and RDA formats for bibliographic database records.
- Familiarity with the core concepts of acquisitions and receiving.
- Broad knowledge of cataloging and metadata workflows and services.
- Demonstrated knowledge of and experience of cataloging policies and procedures.
- Proficiency with the tools and technologies used for processing and managing metadata, especially in bulk (such as MARCEdit, Open Refine, regular expressions, and FTP clients).
- Experience with OCLC Connexion and/or OCLC WorldShare.
- Experience with batch manipulating and batch loading MARC records into a library management system.
- Demonstrated knowledge of Library of Congress Subject Headings, Dewey Decimal, Library of Congress.
- Classification Systems, and Resource Description and Access (RDA).
- Demonstrated knowledge of and experience with library information technology, systems, products, and delivery technologies that support access to library materials.
