Children’s Library Intern, Boston Athenaeum, Boston, MA

Essential Job Functions

The Boston Athenæum seeks a personable and reliable intern for the Children’s Library who will play an important role in providing and maintaining services offered to children. Reporting to the Youth Services Librarian, the intern will help plan and prepare story times and other programs (in-person), keep the library organized, and interact with library members and the public.

The ideal candidate will be organized, hard-working, and ambitious. This position is available to start immediately.

Hours: 15 hours per week, Saturdays, 9AM-5PM and Mondays, 9AM-5PM (or half Monday with another half weekday) with occasional changes to the schedule

Compensation: $15.50 per hour; paid sick time; free membership concurrent with employment

Responsibilities

  • Shelve and maintain order of books
  • Assist in planning and presenting story times (in-person) and craft projects
  • Provide reference services (sometimes for adults)
  • Create readers’ advisory materials
  • Assist with children’s events
  • Select new picture books for acquisition
  • Update Voyager Cataloging System with new books and remove old “new” books
  • Greet and assist with reader advisory services and information on the Boston Athenaeum – its history and artwork within the Children’s Library
  • Performs all other duties as assigned

Qualifications and Requirements

  • Submit to and pass a background check, including criminal history, personal references, employment verifications and Registry of Motor Vehicles (if applicable).
  • Must be currently enrolled in an ALA accredited library science graduate program.
  • Must be comfortable speaking in public.
  • Must be proficient in Microsoft Office.
  • Must be able to lift and move 40 pounds.
  • Completion of reference course preferred.
  • Experience with OCLC resource sharing preferred.
