Circulation Assistant, Westfield Athenaeum, Westfield, MA

Description:

Reporting to the Head of Adult Services, the Circulation Assistant provides high quality customer service, supports all circulation functions in the library, and handles incoming and outgoing interlibrary loan items.

  • 24 hours/week, including some evenings and a Saturday rotation
  • This is a Grade 2 union position with a starting rate of $16.93 (as of January 1, 2023)

Essential Duties:

  • Perform all circulation duties at the main service desk, including: checking out and discharging library material, collecting payments, registering new patron library cards, placing and processing holds, and answering and directing phone calls.
  • Greet patrons and provide friendly customer service to all community members. 
  • Receive, sort, and distribute incoming and outgoing interlibrary loan material through the CWMARS library network.
  • Open and close the circulation desk.
  • Provide readers advisory and information services to patrons in person or on the phone.
  • Attend continuing education seminars, workshops, and meetings when assigned.

Potential Duties:

  • Research, select, and deaccession library materials in order to maintain collections. 
  • Provide programming and marketing support.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent 
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills
  • Interest in libraries and library resources 
  • Computer literacy and the ability to use a computer workstation for an extended length of time
  • Excellent attention to detail
  • Ability to work as part of a team and independently
  • Ability to bend, reach, and lift loads of up to 40 pounds

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree 
  • Experience working in a public library
  • Experience with Evergreen ILS and the CWMARS consortium
