Manager of Public Services, Brandeis University Library, Waltham, MA

The Manager of Public Services, in consultation with the Associate University Librarian for Research and Instruction, will envision and deliver superlative, user focused services to the Brandeis Community. These services include circulation, the Information Commons, technology lending, stacks management, course reserves, information and referral services, as well as campus outreach activities. The Manager regularly evaluates these services to respond to evolving users’ needs and provides leadership in ensuring reliable and productive use of library spaces. This position reports to the Associate University Librarian for Research and Instruction and is part of the extended leadership team.

  • Organizes and oversees front-line services in the Information Commons, including circulation, technology lending, stacks management, course reserves, information and referral services, as well as campus outreach activities. Regularly evaluates these services to respond to evolving users’ needs. Provides leadership in ensuring reliable and productive use of library spaces.
  • Fosters a collaborative team environment and mentors and develops staff talent. Supervises staff and student employees, including their hire, training, scheduling, and evaluations. Oversight of a student work force of 50 or more, including its budget.
  • Participates in campus wide committee work with a focus to partner the Library with other aspects of student engagement and campus initiatives.
  • Maintains currency with trends and best practices in academic libraries and service design in access operations and library commons. Participates in service to the
    profession.


This position manages members of the Library’s collective bargaining unit, represented by the Service Employees International Union (SEIU) Local 888, for purposes of wages, hours and other terms and conditions of employment standardized across the University.

The salary range for this position is $72,000 – $78,000.

The Manager of Public Services is primarily an on-site position.

Qualifications:

Education: MLS required from an ALA accredited program of study, or equivalent education and experience. Work Experience: 3-5 years total related work experience

Required:

  • At least three years of customer service experience in library front-line services, or in a related field; at least three years of applicable supervisory experience
  • Strong customer service background and ability to articulate a user-focused vision of service
  • Experience with outreach initiatives
  • Ability to thoughtfully work with patrons and colleagues to resolve issues, including sensitive situations
  • Demonstrated ability to build relationships and work effectively across different departments and functional units
  • Experience with library a Library Services Platform and related technologies
  • Understanding of academic library environments, operations, and objectives

Preferred:

  • Three years of post-MLS management experience
  • Experience designing or providing information commons services
  • Experience managing a physical facility
  • Project management skills
  • Experience managing access and maintenance of stored collections
  • Familiarity with Ex-Libris Alma/Primo
  • Familiarity with interlibrary loan and reserves practice
