Circulation Associate, Geisel Library, Saint Anselm College, Manchester, NH

Summary

Saint Anselm College, a Roman Catholic and Benedictine liberal arts college in Manchester, N.H., is seeking a Circulation Associate to help serve the community at our beautiful Geisel Library. The Circulation Associate has primary duties for weekday staffing and delivery of services at our busy Circulation Desk, including a wide variety of assistance with collections borrowing, facilities use, student worker success, and library-user inquires made in-person and by phone. Reporting to the Library manager overseeing the Circulation Dept., this position will also support the library in building-wide operations, services and atmosphere as needed throughout the year. The successful candidate will demonstrate a strong customer service orientation coupled with advanced technology competencies and successful attention to details. This is a full-time (35 hours per week), 12-month position, with a January 2023 start date.

Responsibilities and Duties

  • Open the Library and the Circulation Desk on weekdays, ensuring most building-wide amenities are ready for daily community use.
  • Directly assist students, faculty, staff, and all community members with a wide variety of needs at the Circulation Desk, including patron borrowing and returns, facility use and reservations, and a variety of inquiries, making referrals as appropriate.
  • Assist with guidance and coaching of both student workers and part-time evening/weekend Circulation Supervisors, including training, answering questions, fostering good communication, and encouraging positive development of Circulation Desk contributions.
  • Instruct individual patrons in the basic use of library collections, resources, and equipment available in the library as needed.
  • Handle ongoing processing of titles being added and removed from Course Reserves, and the regular processing of overdue and billing notices.
  • Assist with maintenance and accessibility of physical collections on the Main and Upper levels, including assisting patrons and updating workflows to improve efficiencies.
  • Assist with building security matters and respond to emergencies by following appropriate response procedures in a calm and efficient manner.
  • Assist withregular reports and statistics as requested, relevant to current levels of borrowing and circulation desk services and activities.
  • Contributeother periodic assistance as assigned, including special project work and, for example, organization of public displays.

Required Skills

  • Excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills with demonstrated office organizational skills.
  • Requires superior attention to detail and accuracy, with an important emphasis on patron privacy and confidentiality.
  • Must be able to solve problems and/or patron concerns and difficulties with tact, courtesy, sound judgment, and awareness of library policies.
  • Ability to assist with team leadership of student co-workers, while also working independently and autonomously, maintaining a positive attitude.
  • Must be able to prioritize tasks (with guidance) and manage a wide variety of duties and tasks.
  • Experience and comfort with navigating detailed computer interfaces, search engines, web browsers, and Microsoft Office programs, including Outlook, Word, and Excel, or the ability to master the same with training.
  • Must be able to navigate a busy Circulation Desk, 3-floor facility, and standard college stacks (shelving), transporting library books / materials within the building or providing prompt service to waiting patrons. Ability to lift 20 lbs. routinely.
  • Must be pleasant and personable; must have a helpful disposition and friendly demeanor, with ability to empathize with patrons in need.

Qualifications

Required

  • Bachelor’s degree and relevant experience, or a combination of education and experience from which comparable knowledge and skills are acquired

Preferred

  • Experience working at a library Circulation desk, or similar.
  • Experience with an Innovative Millennium/Sierra online library system, or similar.
  • Experience with library collections and college resources.
  • Experience working with college faculty, staff, and college-aged students.
