Part Time Library Assistant in Youth Services, Newburgh Free Library, Newburgh, NY


Works to support Youth Services Department programs and services to children of all ages; provides
general assistance within the Youth Services area to parents, teachers, caregivers and other adults
regarding collections, resources, programs and services. This position is primarily afternoons, with one
evening and one Saturday shift required each month.

Position duties

  1. Plan and conduct programs for school age youth and teens, under supervision of department’s
    librarian staff.
  2. Plan and conduct enrichment programs for youth as part of Summer Reading Program.
  3. Maintain and manage records and information necessary for department’s services and programs,
    including statistics and records to evaluate services to youth and documents/materials used in
  4. Maintain and develop informational materials and resources for department (i.e. flyers, brochures,
    booklists, calendars, etc.)
  5. Assist in creation and distribution of materials to promote and publicize department programs
    and services, including website and other social media promotion.
  6. May be assigned to represent the Library at events in the schools and in the community.
  7. Respond to internal and external inquiries by phone, correspondence or in person.
  8. Works with department staff to evaluate and monitor materials, services and programs and makes
    recommendations for change and improvement.
  9. Provide general assistance for all department programs and activities.
  10. Provide general clerical assistance in support of department staff.

Special Working Conditions

Candidate will facilitate and conduct a variety of programs for families and school-age children as well as
teens. Position requires the ability to efficiently manage time and work independently. Demonstrated
interest in youth culture/trends required.

Minimum Qualifications

  • 4-Year Bachelor’s Degree
  • Working familiarity with library procedures and practices
  • Proficient knowledge of current technology and computer skills
  • Demonstrated knowledge of children and teen programming and activities
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
