SLIS Jobline Your Source for Professional, Pre-Professional, and Internship Positions

Editor and Managing Editor, Archives and Records Journal (Multiple Positions)

Description:

Archives and Records is the journal of the UK and Ireland’s Archives and Records Association. It aims to represent current professional practice and research. Engaging with new ideas and reflecting on existing practice is a vital part of being a professional; and getting involved with Archives and Records will allow you, not just to enhance your own professional development, but also to contribute to the development of the profession as a whole.

We are recruiting two new editors to join our team: one Editor and one Managing Editor. Editors usually serve for 3-5 years and are responsible (in conjunction with the publishers) for the ongoing online and print publication of Archives and Records. We are aiming to appoint the Editor to start in January 2023, and the Managing Editor to start in April 2023.

You will need to have a strong interest in research, the ability to self-organise and manage deadlines, and a keen eye for detail.  We are particularly interested in applicants who are practitioners, and at least one of the new editors should be from the UK or Ireland. We welcome applications from people of colour and those from marginalised communities. Editors should preferably be a member of ARA or willing to become one before appointment.

Responsibilities:

The tasks of the Editor will include:

  • answering enquiries
  • encouraging contributions and potential authors
  • checking that submitted manuscripts fit with the journal’s aims and scope
  • managing the peer review process of submissions
  • making the final decisions on whether to accept articles
  • writing editorials
  • liaising with guest editors for special issues
  • copyediting and proofreading.

The tasks of the Managing Editor will include:

  • liaising with the publisher’s editorial and production staff
  • liaising with ARA staff and Board members
  • liaising with the Editorial Board and chairing Board meetings
  • liaising with the Reviews and Obituaries Editors
  • overseeing the workload allocation across the team
  • strategic planning for the future of the journal.

There may be overlap across the two roles.

Editors normally have the opportunity to attend the ARA or other relevant conference free of charge at least once during your editorial term, and to act as a judge for the FARMER prize for the best UK Master’s dissertation. The Editor post should take on average two hours per week, with additional time required at times to meet deadlines. The Managing Editor should be able to dedicate at least three hours per week to the Journal.

How to Apply:

To apply, please submit a brief (300-500 words) expression of interest and your CV to: [email protected] by 30 November 2022. Please specify which role is of interest to you.

You are welcome to contact one of the current editors if you would like any further details about the role or responding to the call:
