As the center of campus intellectual discovery, the Sacramento State University Library promotes teaching, learning, research, and scholarly communication at the University by integrating the library with student success programs and instruction. One of twenty-three libraries in the California State University System, the Sacramento State University Library holds over 1.4 million volumes, comprised of print and electronic monographs and serials, and is a U.S. Government Depository. The library’s mission is to inspire excellence in teaching, learning, and scholarly activities.  

 The University Library is undergoing rapid transformation with a forward-thinking vision and a deep commitment to improving the campus learning environment. We seek a professionally engaged and collaborative librarian to provide guidance on services and policies to the library and to faculty, students, and staff on matters pertaining to scholarly communication, such as institutional repository best practices, faculty profile system support, issues in academic publishing, copyright and fair use, user privacy issues, data management, and the Open Access and Open Education movements.

Appointment: This is a probationary, 12-month, tenure-track position at the Senior Assistant/Associate Librarian rank with an expected start date of Spring 2023; salary commensurate with qualifications and experience however the anticipated monthly hiring range is $6,190 to $7,538 (Senior Assistant Librarian) $7,102 to $8,450 (Associate Librarian). Librarians in the CSU system enjoy full faculty status and as such are eligible for campus service opportunities, sabbatical and other leaves, and additional benefits. Librarians are represented under Unit 3 of the California Faculty Association (CFA). Excellent benefits, including medical, dental, and vision plans; generous paid leave (24 vacation days and one personal holiday per year and one day of sick leave per month); and membership in CALPERS, the largest retirement system in the country. Library faculty must demonstrate professional competence, scholarly and/or creative achievement, and service to the University and community in order to meet university requirements for tenure and promotion.  

Duties:

Under the general direction of the Head of Collection Management Services, the Scholarly Communication Librarian:

Develops and implements the Library’s scholarly communication program in coordination with other library departments and library Administration. Creates goals and objectives for a cohesive program.

Leads development and implementation of an education program for library employees on issues of scholarly communication. Advises on how librarians in all subject areas can educate and communicate with their constituencies around issues of scholarly communication.

Develops and implements a program to increase awareness among faculty, researchers, and students about scholarly communication issues in the digital environment, alternative publishing models, public-access requirements for grant-funded projects, Open Access, and Open Education.

Promotes the use of the campus’s institutional repository/faculty profile system: Sac State Scholars. Creates and maintains support documentation, policies, and workflow guidelines for the institutional repository. Selects content to include in the repository that is representative of Sac State and showcases the excellence of the university, including high-level undergraduate work.

Develops and maintains a broad network of partners, e.g., the Center for Teaching and Learning (CTL), Information Resources and Technology (IRT), the Office of Research, Innovation, and Economic Development (ORIED), Division of Inclusive Excellence, students, faculty and staff, California State University (CSU) system-wide offices, and the scholarly community to inform, support, and advance the library’s scholarly communication programs and goals.

Stays informed of, and shares with the library and university staff and faculty, national and international trends and developments in scholarly communication, including legislation, changes in intellectual property rights, commercial and academic/research scholarly publishing, and information technologies that affect access and preservation of scholarly information.

Leads library participation in current and newly developed initiatives that encourage and enable faculty to manage their own intellectual property rights, and improve access to published research. Establishes mechanisms to assist faculty with publishing choices, data management plans, licensing agreements, and fair use of copyrighted works as users of information.

Establishes a means of analyzing and evaluating the progress of the library’s scholarly communication outreach and education program.

Helps faculty determine the impact of their scholarship, through both traditional and alternative measurements.

The Scholarly Communication Librarian contributes to library-wide decision-making and serves on library committees as needed.  

Required Qualifications:

1. American Library Association accredited Master’s degree or accredited international equivalent, or accredited advanced degree in a field relevant to the position conferred by December 31, 2022. 
2. At least two years of professional experience in librarianship, research, publishing, law, or another relevant field. 
3. Strong understanding of scholarly communication trends in a diverse academic or research environment
4. Evidence of inclusive and equitable leadership, collaboration, and initiative.
5. Effective oral, written, organizational, and interpersonal skills
6. Commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion and ability to work effectively with diverse populations.
7.  Experience with outreach, marketing, and/or promotion of services relevant to scholarly communication.
8. Demonstrated knowledge of intellectual property rights, Open Access, institutional repositories, accessibility, and related issues as they affect the creation and dissemination of scholarship
9. Understanding of the research or creative scholarship process in higher education.

Preferred Qualifications:

1. Experience with institutional repositories, faculty profile systems and/or data management plans
2. Experience preparing and delivering instruction to a diverse population relevant to scholarly communication.
3. Demonstrated experience in developing working partnerships with academic units in a college or university campus.
4. Advanced degree in subject area relevant to the position.
5. Experience with assessment of library services.
