Assistant Librarian, French Library, Boston, MA

The French Library/Alliance Française of Boston & Cambridge is seeking a dynamic and enthusiastic part-time Assistant Librarian to work in the largest private library of French books in the United States.

Created in 1945, our renowned lending library contains 32,000 documents in all formats. We serve a diverse audience ranging from beginner-level students to native speakers.

The Assistant Librarian assures all daily functions of the Circulation Desk, including but not limited to: loans, shelving, overdues, reader’s advisory, responding to general reference questions, and processing new materials.

This is an exciting opportunity as we just rebranded and reopened our building after a 2-year major renovation of the building. The Assistant Librarian will help refresh and rethink the collection in a brand-new setting.

Responsibilities:

  • Check in and check out library material at the circulation desk
  • Be able to efficiently respond to patron requests in French and English
  • Handle reference and readers advisory services, make recommendations in support of French language learning and CECR goals.
  • Help prepare library events for children and adults (on site and online)
  • Greet all members of the French Library’s community in a friendly and helpful manner
  • Be responsible for opening/closing the library according to their schedule, ensuring the general operation of the library in partnership with the Librarian
  • Help provide marketing and social media content, and contribute to the blog
  • Help keep track of records and statistics

Qualifications:

  • Fluent in English and working proficiency in French
  • Holds a Master of Library Science (preferred but not required if proper, equivalent library experience)
  • Has an appreciation and knowledge of French and Francophone literature and culture
  • Is friendly and finds it easy to interact both on a one-on-one basis with users and to welcome groups
  • Ability to multitask
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Has a great team spirit
  • Candidate must be authorized to work in the U.S.

20 hours/week.
Schedule can be refined with the Librarian but ideally:

September through June:
Tuesday 3 PM – 7 PM
Wednesday 3 PM – 7 PM
Thursday 3 PM – 7 PM
Friday 3 PM – 5 PM
Saturday 9 AM – 3 PM

July-August:
  Tuesday-Friday 12 PM – 5 PM

COMPENSATION

$22/hour based on a 20 hours/week schedule.
