The Archives Assistant position supports the accessioning and processing of University Archives & Special Collections materials. In coordination with other Archives & Special Collections staff, the Archives Assistant undertakes processing of archival manuscript collections, as well as assists with administrative tasks related to the accessioning of new archival acquisitions.

Job Description:

Archival processing (60%)

  • Conducts surveys of archival manuscript collections.
  • In consultation with the Manager of Digital Distinctive Collections or Collections Management Archivist, writes and implements processing plans.
  • Arranges, describes, and creates online finding aids for collections according to accepted archival standards.
  • Applies basic preservation tasks to archival materials.
  • Prepares materials for offsite storage.

Archival accessioning (30%)

  • In collaboration with the Collections Management Archivist, surveys new archival donations and records accessions data using relevant collections management tools.
  • Helps maintain physical and digital control files.
  • Creates accession records in ArchivesSpace.

Department responsibilities (10%)

  • Contributes to the day-to-day functions of the Department and participates in departmental activities.
  • Participates in Library and University committees and groups.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Requirements:

BA/BS and 1-3 years related work experience. MA/MS or graduate level coursework in archives/special collections is preferred.

Excellent organizational skills and demonstrated ability to manage a wide variety of tasks in a complex and dynamic environment 

Ability to work collaboratively and effectively with colleagues at all levels of the Library and University community

Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills

Demonstrated knowledge of trends, principles, and practices in archives and special collections is a plus

Commitment to contributing to the Library’s work in developing an environment that is inclusive and supportive of diversity

The Archives Assistant is a part-time (17.5 hours per week) position and primarily works on-site.

The hiring range for this position is $28.46 – 29.50 per hour.

This is a union position. Employees working in this position are covered by the collective bargaining agreement between the University and Service Employees International Union (SEIU) Local 888.  Provisions related to wages, benefits and other terms of employment are contained in the agreement.
