Description:
The Part-Time Cataloger processes new print titles for the Boston Athenaeum’s Circulating and
Reference collections by identifying and modifying MARC records found in OCLC WorldCat. In
addition, the Part-Time Cataloger will create original MARC records based on established
bibliographic standards and local practice.
Salary: $20-$23/hr
Essential Functions:
● Locate and edit MARC bibliographic records in OCLC WorldCat to RDA
specification, using the Connexion interface
● Assign Library of Congress Classification Numbers and Library of Congress Subject
Headings to bibliographic records as needed
● Import enhanced and upgraded bibliographic records into the Voyager integrated
library system and edit holdings and item records appropriately and marking books
with call numbers and applying barcodes
● Generate and apply spine labels
● Assist interns with end processing—pasting in bookplates, covering dust jackets, applying circulation
labels etc.
● Track and resolve retrospective conversion problems, identifying and merging duplicate records,
replacing incorrect bibliographic records, address barcode issues, etc.
● Occasionally serve as a back-up supervisor in the Special Collections Reading Room
● Provide reader assistance as needed
● Process bindery shipments
Requirements:
● Excellent computer skills— e.g. Microsoft and Google applications
● Careful attention to detail
● Ability to carry out detailed procedures with accuracy under minimal supervision;
● Ability to plan and prioritize job responsibilities
● Effective communication skills, including the ability to present complex concepts
and ideas clearly in written or oral form
● Capacity to work collegially with other staff members and to interact respectfully with patrons
● Position requires sitting at a desk for prolonged periods and engaging in repetitive
movements of the hands, wrists and fingers
● Position also requires the ability to handle and lift packages weighing as much as 30
pounds and the ability to push book carts between internal office locations
Preferred Qualifications:
● Two- to four-year college degree
● Experience in libraries with an emphasis in cataloging or technical services areas
● Experience using OCLC WorldCat and Voyager integrated library system
● Basic knowledge of MARC standards, RDA, Library of Congress Classification Numbers,
and Library of Congress Subject Headings
