The Outreach and Instruction Librarian provides exceptional, creative, and outward-facing patron-oriented services. Through innovating research, enhancing teaching and learning, and building communities this position will play an important role in the future of Baylor University Libraries and the Texas Collection & University Archives.

The Texas Collection & University Archives is a dynamic research library established in 1923 and devoted to collecting Texana in all formats. Chartered by the Republic of Texas in 1845, Baylor University’s history is deeply intertwined with the rich history, culture, and heritage of Texas. The Outreach and Instruction Librarian will demonstrate collaboration, vision, wisdom, and ingenuity in providing leadership for the library in outreach initiatives, instruction, and access to the library with a specific oversight of the map and print materials about Texas. A vital component of this position is expanding the sphere of influence of the Texas Collection & University Archives on campus among students and faculty as well as the greater community.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Provides leadership for outreach and instruction programming in collaboration with other Texas Collection & University Archives library personnel
Provides creative leadership, collaboration, vision, and direction which facilitates access to and promotes use of the library, maps, and print materials by a broad and diverse audience
Leads and coordinates reference services, answering questions in person and using social media
Actively promotes use of materials by faculty and students, integrating information literacy concepts and skills into their curriculum
Manages access services for the library
Assists in maintaining successful relationships with potential donors of materials
Makes recommendations to the Director regarding library collection development, and selections for digitization
Works collaboratively with colleagues in Baylor’s Riley Digitization Center on digitization and curation of digital assets
Remains current in emerging technologies used in special collections
Pursues professional development opportunities through local and national conferences, meetings, and workshops and involvement in professional organizations
Engages in library-wide initiatives through committees and task forces

Qualifications:

Required:

Master’s degree in library/information science from an ALA-accredited institution
Experience using and promoting special collections
Ability to collaborate with colleagues and a diverse clientele in a service-oriented, research-intensive environment
Ability to communicate and work effectively in an academic setting, with demonstrated skills in oral communication, written communication, and interpersonal interaction
Effective organizational, teaching and presentation skills
Demonstrated flexibility, creativity, and initiative in one’s work
Ability to manage multiple simultaneous projects and competing priorities
Effective presentation skills
Commitment to continual development of professional knowledge and skills

Desired:

Certificate or concentration of study in library special collections
Thorough knowledge of library and archival theory, methods, and practices
Basic knowledge of preservation techniques
Knowledge of rare book librarianship principles
Experience working with rare books and special collections
