Description:
Under the supervision of the Metadata Services Manager, and in collaboration with the Statewide Metadata Coordinator, the Metadata Cataloger supports all aspects of the digitization workflow, in particular the recording of standardized, authorized, and well-formed metadata to create a high level of accessibility, usability, and interoperability of digitized materials for the Boston Public Library and its statewide partners.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s Degree from a recognized college or university and a Master’s Degree in Library and Information Science or equivalent from an accredited library school. Courses in digital libraries, XML, and/or standards-based non-MARC metadata schemas taken for credit at an accredited library school are required.
- A minimum of 4 years experience with metadata work on digital projects in a library setting, including direct, relevant experience with XML, metadata production, and digitization, as well as standards-based non-MARC metadata schemas such as Dublin Core, MODS, METS, EAD, and TEI.
- Demonstrated experience with authority work; demonstrated knowledge of traditional cataloging standards; demonstrated experience with controlled vocabularies such as LCSH, LCTGM, LCNAF, and the Getty Vocabularies.
- Familiarity with data manipulation tools that use regular expressions such as MARCedit, OpenRefine, VBA and scripting languages such as Ruby, Perl, and Python.
- Proficiency in a second language other than English desirable.
Requirements:
- Residency – Must be a resident of the City of Boston upon the first day of hire.
- CORI – Must successfully clear a Criminal Offenders Record Information check with the City of Boston.
- Valid driver’s license and ability to travel throughout Massachusetts and New England.
