[CLOSED] Library Director, Thetford, VT(Latham Memorial Library and George Peabody Library)

Description:

The Library Director is responsible for strategic leadership for the Latham Memorial Library and the George Peabody Library, which are incorporated public libraries. The Library Director works in partnership with the professional library staff to develop the libraries as vibrant community centers. The Library Director has a deep commitment to community engagement, and to collaboratively providing services, programs, collections and spaces that meet the needs of all members of the community.  

Duties include leadership, administration, community outreach and advocacy, programming, collection development and management; examples:

  • Plan and lead projects, including those regarding capital improvements and library technology
  • Develop budgets and manage finances; identify and apply for grants 
  • Guide and support the paid and volunteer staff  
  • Collaboratively develop, implement and maintain policies and procedures for contemporary practices regarding library services for all populations  
  • In partnership with the professional library staff, develop and manage the print and digital collections, with attention to diverse community needs.  
  • In collaboration with professional library staff, provide a wide variety of programming and develop digital and physical spaces to meet the diverse needs of the whole community  
  • Engage with the community in providing and evaluating programs and services 

Education and experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree
  • Advanced degree from an ALA accredited institution in Library and Information Science 
    • or a Certificate of Public Librarianship 
    • or equivalent in education and experience

The ideal candidate is enthusiastic about working with staff, board members and the community to provide library services, spaces, collections and innovative programs in response to community feedback. The ideal candidate has excellent written and verbal skills, and welcomes opportunities to advocate for the value of the library with the community. The ideal candidate has a proven record of working collaboratively, of managing finances and budgets, and in working with information technology and social media.  

Salary Range: $51,000.00 – $61,000.00, commensurate with qualifications and experience. This is a full-time, salaried position, based on 38 hours per week, and includes a comprehensive benefits package.

About the Thetford Community:

Thetford is a town in Orange County, Vermont, located in the Upper Connecticut River Valley.  The town is composed of small villages that include East Thetford, North Thetford, Thetford Hill, Thetford Center, Rices Mills, Union Village, and Post Mills.  Thetford has a population of 2775 as of the 2020 census.  There are two libraries that serve the public in Thetford.  Latham Memorial Library is located in Thetford Hill in close proximity to three schools, which are Thetford Elementary, Thetford Academy, and Open Fields.  George Peabody Library, the oldest building used as a library in Vermont, is located in Post Mills. Since the 1800’s, libraries in Thetford have played a central role in the life of the community.  

By employing 68 hours of professional librarian expertise, these incorporated public libraries provide print and digital collections, programs, information technology services, and outreach to the Thetford community and beyond.  The Library Director reports directly to the Latham Library Board of Trustees, a 501-c-3 corporation, and allots about 25% of library staff time for programs and services for the Peabody Library, in close consultation with the Peabody Library Board of Trustees. The Library Director is responsible for the maintenance and development of the Latham Library’s spaces within the Bicentennial Building, while the Peabody Board is responsible for the Peabody Library spaces and building.  The Thetford Library Federation owns and maintains the Bicentennial Building.
